Fault finding
Below is a list of possible problems, with brief details of the required remedies.

Engine won't start or starts faulty cylinder head gasket replace gasket

faulty fuel pump check working order
no petrol in carburetor check float level
valve clearance too small adjust valve clearance
worn valves or valve guides or imperfect valve seats

gap between pick-up and rotor too large adjust gap

starter motor doesn't turn engine or works intermittently check battery

Engine runs badly when idling valves vorn, or damaged valve seats replace valve guides, regrind valve seats
CO content too low at idling rate check carburetor and jets, adjust idle rate
carburetor hose not hermetically sealed replace carburetor hose
spark plug gap to wide replace spark plug or set gap correctly
Engine runs badly at high revs dirty carburetor clean jets
spark gap too small replace spark plug or set gap correctly
insufficient voltage from ignition coil replace coil
incorrect valve timing check timing gear stroke
Engine pings under load air leaks in the induction system eliminate any leaks
spark plug with incorrect thermal rating install spark plug with correct thermal rating
petrol octane rating too low use petrol with specified octane rating
replace valves, valve guides, regrind valve seats
