Overview

The RxEars RXS is a hearing instrument designed to provide enhanced sound quality, noise reduction, and a discreet appearance. It is developed with over 50 years of commitment to excellence in hearing instrument technology.

Function Description:

The RxEars RXS is a personal sound amplification product that helps individuals with hearing loss to better perceive sounds in various environments. It operates by capturing sound through a microphone, processing it, and delivering it to the ear via a sound tube and eartip/ziptip. The device features multiple program settings to adapt to different listening situations and allows for volume adjustments.

Important Technical Specifications (based on ANSI S3.22-2014):

  • Battery: Uses a 10A battery.
  • Peak OSPL90-dB: 101*
  • HFA OSPL90-dB: 92*
  • HFA/FOG-dB: 17
  • RTG-dB: 15
  • Battery Drain-mA: 0.78
  • Frequency Range-Hz: 200-5800
  • Distortion: 1%
  • EQ Input Noise Level-dB SPL: <29
  • Attack/Release Time-mS @2KHz: 6/80
  • I/O Characteristics CR: 1:1
  • RTG @ 2000HZ: (Value not explicitly stated, but graph shows frequency response at RTG 60dB)
  • *AGC not fully activated

Usage Features:

  • Battery Placement and Powering On: To power on, pull the battery door open with a fingernail, remove the tab from a 10A battery to activate it, and place the battery with the (+) sign facing the (+) symbol on the battery door. Close the battery door to power on the instrument, which includes a five-second delay.
  • Identification: Each instrument has a serial number, model name, and company printed on the case. The first two numbers indicate the year of manufacture, and the next six numbers indicate the serial number.
  • Side Identification: The red-lettered tube is for the right side, and the blue-lettered tube is for the left side. The tube size (e.g., 1B/2B) is printed on the tube.
  • Placement in Ear: Ensure ear canals are clean. Hold the tubing near the top by the instrument and place it over the ear (A). Gently push the Ziptip/Eartip into the ear until it sits comfortably in the canal (B). Move the retention lock into the bowl of the ear (C).
  • Removal from Ear: Gently pull the tubing near the Ziptip/Eartip and guide the tip out of the canal. Lift up to remove the device from above the ear.
  • Powering Off: Use a fingernail to open the battery door. This will turn off the instrument. Leave the door open; the battery can remain in the open door.
  • Volume Control: Place your thumb into the helix portion of your ear and your index finger on the program button. Briefly press and release the button to increase the volume. Each press/release increases the volume slightly, confirmed by an indicator. Holding the button down continuously will not change the volume. Tap the button until you reach the fourth program (four beeps), then tap one more time to return to the softest program (Program 1).
  • Program Adjustments: After closing the battery door, the device turns on in the program last used. Pressing the program button cycles through programs in sequence: 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4, etc.
    • Program 1: Lowest volume.
    • Program 2: More volume.
    • Program 3: More bass, more volume.
    • Program 4: Maximum volume (four beeps).
    • Note: Typical settings may differ from final settings. Users are advised to visit the website for program information on their model.
  • Using the Telephone: Bring the telephone/handset near your ear. If feedback/whistling occurs, gently rotate the handset away from your ear until the feedback stops. Adjust the volume on the telephone for clarity. Try different handset positions for more volume.
  • Eartip and ZipTip Selection:
    • Tube with Eartip: Use a dome-shape Eartip if the ZipTip does not fit or if you feel too "plugged up."
    • Tube with ZipTip: Keep the small vent hole (C) at the bottom of the ear, farther from the device.
    • Change to a larger tip if the instrument is loose in the ear, if sound is chirping or whistling (feedback), or if there is insufficient volume.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning: Keep the instrument clean. Use a soft cloth to wipe the unit after each use to remove particles or moisture. A cleaning tool is provided to remove debris or wax from the sound tube and Ziptip/Eartip. A soft bristle brush can be used to wipe debris or earwax from the microphone opening. If sound is muted, the sound tube may be plugged with wax and should be cleaned with the cleaning tool.
  • Tube Removal for Cleaning/Sizing:
    1. Gently rotate the sound tube while holding the instrument firmly.
    2. Pull the sound tube from the hearing instrument.
    3. To clean, insert the cleaning tool through the nose cone end and thread it all the way through the tube and eartip to remove wax and debris.
    4. To reassemble, align the sound tube with the device and push until it snaps into place.
  • Battery Life Prolongation: Open battery doors when instruments are not in use.
  • Storage: Store instruments in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight or heat.
  • Dehumidification: Use a hearing aid dehumidifier (often known as a "dry aid kit") to keep the instrument dry.
  • Activities to Avoid: Remove the instrument before swimming, bathing, applying hair products, or exposing it to rainy weather.
  • Drying Precautions: NEVER attempt to dry the instrument using a hair dryer, oven, or microwave.

Troubleshooting:

  • Weak or no sound: Check/replace the battery. Check for wax and clean both the microphone and the tubing/Ziptip/Eartip.
  • Whistling/Feedback: Decrease volume. Check for wax and clean tubing. Ensure the eartip fits snugly in the ear.
  • Program button does not work: Battery is low or dead. Check the battery. Clean the microphone and tubing.
  • Static/Noise: Move away from electromagnetic devices such as digital or cellular telephones or fluorescent lights. Check/replace the battery. Check for poor battery contact. Clean the microphone and tip.
  • Works for a short time and then stops: Check your battery. Clean thoroughly for wax. Use a hearing aid dehumidifier. Moisture build-up, if not visible, may require service.
  • Battery door stuck/Won't open or close: The battery may not be positioned correctly. Be gentle and do not use force. Check for debris in the battery compartment.

Important Notices (FDA Required Statements):

  • Medical Evaluation: Good health practice requires a medical evaluation by a physician (preferably an ear specialist) before purchasing a hearing instrument to ensure treatable conditions affecting hearing are identified and addressed.
  • Allergies: The materials used are of the highest quality, and allergic reactions are slight. If skin irritation occurs, discontinue use and contact your physician.
  • Children: A child with hearing loss should be directed to an Audiologist for evaluation and rehabilitation, as hearing loss can affect speech, language development, and social/educational growth.
  • Message to Dispenser: A hearing instrument dispenser should advise a prospective user to consult a licensed physician if any of the following conditions are determined: visible congenital or traumatic ear deformity, history of active ear drainage within 90 days, sudden or rapidly progressive hearing loss within 90 days, acute or chronic dizziness, unilateral hearing loss of sudden or recent onset within 90 days, audiometric air-bone gap equal to or greater than 15 decibels at 500 Hz, 1000 Hz, and 2000 Hz, visible evidence of significant cerumen accumulation or a foreign body in the ear canal, or pain or discomfort in the ear.

Warranty:

The full warranty can be found on the manufacturer's website. Users are advised NOT to attempt to fix the device themselves, as this could cause more damage and void the existing warranty. Tips and waxguards are considered maintenance items and are excluded from the warranty.

Service and Repair:

Users should first consult the troubleshooting guide. If problems persist, contact customer support for assistance. For repairs, send the hearing instrument carefully packaged and insured to the service address listed on the website, including your name, telephone number, and email.
