Overview

The Model 50 Digital Message On Hold Player is a device designed to play MP3 audio files from a USB thumb drive as "music on hold" for phone systems. Its primary function is to provide custom audio messages or music to callers while they are on hold.

Function Description

The device operates by playing MP3 files stored in the root directory of a USB thumb drive. When a USB thumb drive is inserted, the player automatically begins playing any MP3 audio files within 10 seconds. It's important to note that no audio is played when the USB thumb drive is removed, resulting in silence. The player is specifically designed to handle MP3 files and will not play WAV or other audio file types. For optimal audio quality, it is recommended to use MP3 files encoded at 64kbps or greater, in stereo.

The Model 50 Digital Message On Hold Player comes with two USB thumb drives. The first drive (#1) contains default generic "On Hold" audio. The second drive (#2) includes additional generic "On Hold" files, sample files for creating custom music and voice files (which play in alphanumeric order), and a free open-source audio editor called Audacity for Windows (also available for Mac and Linux). This setup allows users to easily change their "On Hold" announcements as needed by simply updating the content on the USB thumb drive.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Audio Output: The device features a 600 ohm RCA jack output. This output is typically connected to a "Music On Hold" (MOH) input on a phone system.
  • Supported Audio Format: MP3 files only.
  • Recommended MP3 Quality: 64kbps or greater, stereo.
  • File Location: Only MP3 files located in the root directory of the USB thumb drive are played. Files in sub-directories are not accessed.
  • Playback Order: If multiple MP3 files are present in the root directory, they are played in alphanumeric order based on their filenames.
  • Power: The device is powered by an AC wall transformer, which connects to a power jack on the digital player.

Usage Features

Installation:

  1. Audio Connection: Connect the 600 ohm RCA audio output of the digital player to the "music on hold" jack on the phone system using the supplied audio cable. In some cases, it may be necessary to cut off the end of the cable and use a beanie to jumper wire for punch-down connections.
  2. Power Connection: Connect the AC wall transformer to the power jack on the digital player and plug the transformer into a wall outlet.
  3. USB Thumb Drive Insertion: Insert the MOH Drive (USB thumb drive) into the front of the Model 50 Digital Message On Hold Player.
  4. Playback Start: Audio playback will commence within approximately 5 to 10 seconds.
  5. Audio Monitoring: A "Speaker Switch" on the front panel allows users to preview the audio being played. For normal operation, this switch should be left in the "OFF" position.
  6. Volume Adjustment: A volume control on the rear panel enables adjustment of the audio output level to the desired volume.

Recording/Changing Messages:

  1. Remove USB Drive: Remove the MOH DRIVE from the Model 50 Digital Message On Hold Player.
  2. Connect to Computer: Insert the MOH DRIVE into the USB port of a computer. A USB extension cable is included if needed.
  3. Computer Recognition: Allow approximately 30 seconds for the computer to recognize the MOH Drive.
  4. Access Drive Contents: Double-click "My Computer" (or equivalent) and then double-click on the "MOH DRIVE" to view its contents. If the drive is not listed, remove the USB Thumb Drive, wait 5 seconds, and re-insert it.
  5. Manage Files:
    • Delete any unwanted messages from the MOH DRIVE.
    • Drag and drop, or copy and paste, new message files to the MOH DRIVE. Remember, only files in the root directory will be played, and they will play in alphanumeric order.
  6. Re-insert USB Drive: Take the USB FLASH DRIVE back to the Model 50 Digital Message On Hold Player and insert it into the player. The new message(s) will begin playing within 5 to 10 seconds.

Storing Unused Audio Files: To store audio files on the USB Drive without having them play, create a folder (e.g., "UNUSED MESSAGES") on the USB Drive and save the audio files within that folder. Files in sub-directories are not played by the Model 50 Digital Message On Hold Player. To play an unused file, simply drag it out of the folder and into the root directory of the USB drive.

Maintenance Features

  • Easy Message Updates: The design allows for quick and easy updates to the "On Hold" announcement by simply modifying the contents of the USB thumb drive.
  • Included Accessories: The device comes with an RCA to RCA Audio Cord, a Power Cube, Mounting Screws for wall mounting, and Feet for shelf placement, providing flexibility in installation and setup.
  • Self-Contained Playback: The player operates independently once the USB drive is inserted, requiring minimal ongoing interaction.
