Check that the product is suitable for the intended application, follow installation instructions
and ensure all relevant personnel read the points listed below. Also ensure these instructions
are passed on to the end user.
TO THE USER
Read the following instructions carefully.
WARNING: Please note that incorrect installation may invalidate the warranty.
APPLICATION
This SEAFLO electric field sensor senses water level and automatically controls a 12 or 24 volt
bilge pump. The switch turns on when it senses 41mm (1.6") water level and turns off when
water is below 9.5mm (0.37"). This product is designed for use in pleasure boat applications,
and is not intended to be used in commercial boating applications or for any other use.
MAINTENANCE
Winterizing
Fully drain system for winterising. Failure to winterise your system may invalidate the product
warranty.
For optimal performance
• ensure the switch is clear of debris.
• keep fuse and wiring connections high and dry.
This SEAFLO electric field sensor is designed to only require minimal maintenance.
Warning: ensure that the switch is disconnected from electrics and thats the system is fully
drained prior to maintenance.
Annual checks
• SEAFLO advises that the vessel plumbing system is checked annually for leaks and
obstructions. A full boat electrics check by a marine electrician is also recommended.
• SEAFLO advises testing your switch as per section 7.4 on an annual basis.

Overview

This document describes the SEAFLO Electric Field Bilge Switch, an automatic water level sensor designed for use in pleasure boat applications. It is not intended for commercial boating or other uses.

Function Description

The SEAFLO electric field sensor detects water levels and automatically controls a 12 or 24 volt bilge pump. The switch activates the pump when it senses a water level of 41mm (1.6") and deactivates it when the water level drops below 9.5mm (0.37").

Important Technical Specifications

  • Voltage: 12V/24V DC
  • Current: 20A at 12V or 10A at 24V
  • Wire Gauge Size/Length: 18AWG/1000mm
  • Net Weight (N.W.): 0.1KG
  • Dimensions:
    • Length: 2.87in (73mm)
    • Width: 2.44in (62mm)
    • Height: 3.62in (92mm)
    • Mounting Base Length: 2.93in (74.5mm)
    • Mounting Base Width: 0.86in (22mm)
    • Mounting Hole Diameter: 0.2in (5.1mm)
  • Operating Voltage Range: 10.5 V d.c. to 28.8 V d.c. (Do not use with other voltages, AC, or AC to DC converted power sources).
  • Maximum Current Draw: Up to 20 amps.
  • Maximum Operating Temperature: ~60°C
  • Maximum Flash Temperature: ~90°C
  • Activation Water Level: 41mm (1.6")
  • Deactivation Water Level: Below 9.5mm (0.37")

Usage Features

Installation:

  • Location: The switch should be mounted vertically with wires uppermost, as close to the pump as possible to ensure the same water level.
  • Mounting Block: A mounting block, at least 10mm (3/8") thick marine plywood epoxied to the hull, is required. The switch should not be fastened directly to the hull.
  • Switch Base Position: The switch base can be located up to 6mm (1/4") higher than the pump's base, but never lower.
  • Mounting Procedure:
    1. Use the switch base or mounting ears as a template to mark pilot holes on the mounting block.
    2. Drill two 3mm (1/8") diameter pilot holes, ensuring to set a drill depth gauge to avoid drilling through the hull.
    3. Fasten the switch onto the mounting block using #8 x 1/2" (3.5mm diameter x 13mm) stainless steel screws (not supplied).

Wiring:

  • Safety First: Always switch off power before making connections. Wiring must comply with applicable electrical standards and include a properly rated circuit breaker (maximum 20 Amps). Fuse rating must match the pump used in the system.
  • Wiring Diagram (3-Way Switch):
    • Manual Terminal: Connects directly to the brown (+) pump wire.
    • Automatic Terminal: Connects to the switch brown/white stripe (+).
    • Switch Brown (-): Connects to the pump brown (+).
    • Black (-) Pump Wire: Connects to the negative battery terminal.
  • Connections: All wiring connections should be made above the highest water level using permanent waterproof terminals. Coat terminals with liquid electrical tape.
  • Warning: Incorrect wiring can cause fire, injury, or death, and may invalidate the warranty.

Testing:

  1. After installation, hold fingers on the two raised circles on the switch face for 10 seconds.
    • If wiring is correct, the pump should activate.
    • Removing the top finger should keep the pump on.
    • Removing the bottom finger should turn the pump off after a short delay.
  2. Test with water in the bilge to confirm proper pump activation and deactivation. Reposition the switch if necessary.

Maintenance Features

General Maintenance:

  • The SEAFLO electric field sensor is designed to require minimal maintenance.
  • Warning: Ensure the switch is disconnected from electrics and the system is fully drained prior to maintenance.

For Optimal Performance:

  • Ensure the switch is clear of debris.
  • Keep the fuse and wiring connections high and dry.

Annual Checks:

  • Vessel Plumbing System: SEAFLO advises an annual check of the vessel's plumbing system for leaks and obstructions.
  • Electrics Check: A full boat electrics check by a marine electrician is recommended annually.
  • Switch Testing: SEAFLO advises testing the switch annually as per the instructions in section 7.4 (referring to the testing procedure described above).

Winterizing:

  • Fully drain the system for winterizing. Failure to winterize the system may invalidate the product warranty.
