Overview

The 12V Battery Backup UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply), part number UPS-5AH-12V, is a self-contained 12-volt DC battery backup unit designed to provide a constant, uninterruptible power source for a Safe Fleet recorder and its accessories. This device contains an internal, sealed lead-acid battery that is charged directly from the vehicle's electrical system. Its primary function is to ensure continuous power to the recorder, even if the vehicle's main battery experiences voltage fluctuations or drops below a critical threshold.

Function Description:

The UPS constantly monitors the vehicle's battery voltage using predefined setpoints. Based on these conditions, it intelligently switches the power source for the recorder between the vehicle battery and its internal backup battery. This ensures that the recorder remains operational without interruption.

Key Setpoints and Their Functions:

  • Main On (12.5V): When the vehicle battery voltage is greater than 12.5V, the controller utilizes the vehicle battery as the primary power source for the recorder.
  • Main Off (11.8V): If the vehicle battery voltage drops below 11.8V, the controller automatically switches the recorder's power supply from the vehicle battery to the internal UPS battery.
  • Charge On (12.7V): When the vehicle battery voltage is above 12.7V, the controller initiates a trickle charge to the UPS's internal battery. This charging process operates independently of other functions, ensuring the backup battery remains topped up.
  • Charge Off (12.1V): The controller ceases charging the UPS battery when the vehicle battery voltage falls below 12.1V.
  • Aux On (12.6V):* This setpoint is relevant if an optional auxiliary battery is connected. If the vehicle battery voltage is below 11.8V (Main Off), the unit switches the recorder to the auxiliary battery. If the auxiliary battery then drops below 10.0V (Aux Off), it will remain off until the vehicle battery power is above 12.5V (Main On). The Aux On feature ensures the recorder is powered if the auxiliary battery is replaced or charged.
  • Aux Off (10.0V):* When the voltage at the Aux Input falls below 10.0V, the Aux Input is disconnected. It will not reconnect until the voltage at the Aux Input exceeds 12.6V (Aux On). If the vehicle battery voltage recovers, the controller switches the recorder back to vehicle battery power and resets the Aux On/Off state.
    • Note: Auxiliary battery is optional.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Power Source: 12-volt DC from the vehicle's electrical system.
  • Battery Type: Internal, sealed lead-acid battery.
  • Dimensions: 6W x 6.5L x 5.5H inches (15.2W x 16.5L x 14H centimeters). This compact size makes it suitable for installation on a shelf within an equipment cabinet.
  • Wiring: Requires minimum gauge 14 AWG wire for connecting the UPS Main and GND terminals to the vehicle battery.
  • Fuse: Supplied with a 15A fuse for protection.

Usage Features:

  • Automatic Power Switching: Seamlessly transitions between vehicle battery and internal backup battery based on voltage conditions, ensuring uninterrupted operation of the recorder.
  • Trickle Charging: Maintains the internal backup battery's charge level when the vehicle battery voltage is sufficient.
  • LED Indicators: Provides visual feedback on the current power source:
    • Main LED: Illuminates when the vehicle battery is powering the recorder.
    • Aux LED: Illuminates when the UPS internal battery is powering the recorder.
  • Easy Installation: Designed for horizontal mounting on a flat surface using four self-tapping screws. The installation process involves wiring to the vehicle battery and the recorder, and inserting a 15A fuse.
  • Environmental Considerations: Should not be installed in locations exposed to excessive moisture, heat, or dust to ensure optimal performance and longevity. Wiring should be routed away from sharp edges to prevent insulation damage.

Maintenance Features:

  • Fuse Protection: Includes a replaceable 15A fuse to protect the unit from electrical overloads. The fuse cover is designed to snap off for easy access.
  • Service and Support:
    • For service, users are instructed to call toll-free numbers (1.877.630.7366 or 1.844.899.7366) and provide the model and/or serial number.
    • A Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) number is required for service, which helps service technicians track the product. The RMA number must be displayed on the outside of the package; products sent without an RMA may be refused.
    • Email support is available at service@seon.com.
  • Documentation: Additional copies of the quick install guide and other supporting documentation can be found on the Safe Fleet Community website: https://community.seon.com/documents/.
