Overview

The Sherwood Oasis regulator is a high-performance scuba diving device designed to provide divers with a reliable and comfortable air supply underwater. This owner's manual outlines its features, usage, maintenance, and warranty information, emphasizing safety and proper handling.

Function Description:

The Sherwood Oasis regulator is a second-stage demand regulator, which is a critical component of a self-contained underwater breathing apparatus (SCUBA). Its primary function is to reduce the high-pressure air from a scuba cylinder to a breathable pressure, delivering it to the diver on demand. The regulator is designed to provide an ample air supply with minimal breathing resistance, ensuring comfortable diving. It also offers options for attaching various accessories, including a submersible pressure gauge or dive computer, a buoyancy compensator inflator air supply, and an alternate air source (octo).

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Nitrox Compatibility: Sherwood Oasis regulators are designed and manufactured for use with clean air or Nitrox mixtures containing no more than 40% oxygen. For interchangeable use with Nitrox and air, the regulator must only be exposed to clean air with condensed hydrocarbons of not more than 0.1 mg/liter. Dedicated Nitrox use is recommended to maintain cleanliness.
  • Cold Water Performance: The regulator is suitable for cold water diving, but specific precautions are necessary. Diving in water temperatures less than 50°F (10°C) can impose operational limits. The EN250:2014 standard specifies minimum performance requirements for SCUBA regulators, with testing performed with air to a maximum depth of 165 FSW (50 MSW). Regulators not suitable for water colder than 50°F (10°C) are marked "> 10°C". Sherwood regulators are CE certified to a maximum operating depth of 50 M (165 FT).
  • Oxygen Content for Nitrox: EN 13949:2003 describes special qualification testing for regulators used with gases whose oxygen content is greater than 22%. Regulators passing this test are marked NITROX/O2.
  • M26 Inlet Fitting: EN 144-3 describes the M26 regulator inlet fitting and M26 valve, which must be used with gases containing over 22% oxygen in the EU. These fittings and valves are marked with the maximum rated working pressure.
  • Air Quality Standard: EN 12021 specifies allowable contaminants and component gases for compressed air, equivalent to the USA Compressed Gas Association's Grade E air. This ensures that the air supplied is safe to breathe and minimizes issues with high-percentage oxygen systems.

Usage Features:

  • Venturi Assist Control: Sherwood regulators (excluding BRUT SRB9150) include a device to control venturi assist, which helps decrease inhalation resistance at high flow rates. The maximum assist (least resistance) is achieved by rotating the switch clockwise towards the mouthpiece. Reducing the assist (increasing resistance) by rotating the switch counterclockwise towards the front of the second stage makes the regulator more stable when unattended. For breathing, the switch should be in the least resistance position.
  • Pre-Dive Inspection: Before each dive, a thorough inspection is crucial. This includes checking all hoses for damage (retracting protectors to inspect fittings), visually inspecting the entire regulator for any signs of damage, and confirming air flow by pressing the purge button and taking test breaths after connecting to a pressurized cylinder. Breathing effort should be minimal.
  • Accessory Attachment: The regulator is designed to accommodate various accessories, including submersible pressure gauges, dive computers, buoyancy compensator inflator air supplies, and alternate air sources (octo). Sherwood recommends professional installation of these accessories by an Authorized Sherwood Dealer.
  • Handling Precautions: Once pressurized, the regulator should not be repositioned to change hose orientation, nor should the assembly be carried by the hoses or by using the regulator as a handle for lifting the cylinder, as this can cause damage.
  • Addressing Free Flow: If the regulator free flows (continues to flow air unintentionally), typically caused by impact or sudden removal from the mouth during inhalation, covering the mouthpiece opening with a thumb or replacing it in the mouth should stop the flow. If it persists, the dive must be terminated, and the regulator examined by a professional.
  • Cold Water Diving: Divers must be aware of and observe special measures for diving in cold water (below 50°F/10°C) to minimize the risk of regulator freezing. This includes specific training on emergency measures for dealing with regulator free flow.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning After Dive: The regulator should be cleaned as soon as possible after diving to prevent corrosion or deposit formation, which can degrade performance.
  • Rinsing Procedure: Ideally, the regulator should be rinsed while still pressurized. If not possible, the first stage inlet protector (Dust Cap) must be replaced before rinsing. During rinsing, the second stage purge button should not be depressed to avoid opening the demand valve and allowing contaminants to enter the valve sealing area.
  • Drying: The regulator should be thoroughly dried before long-term storage.
  • Storage: Store the dry regulator in a container that protects it from dirt, chemicals, or ultraviolet light. Avoid storage near electrical equipment (motors, computers, appliances) that emit ozone, which can prematurely deteriorate seals and rubber parts.
  • Dealer Service:
    • Annual Inspection: It is strongly recommended that an Authorized Sherwood Dealer inspect the regulator annually, or anytime performance decreases or damage is suspected. This helps resolve potential issues before a dive trip.
    • Factory Recommended Overhaul: A factory-recommended service overhaul is recommended every other year or after 300 hours of use, whichever comes first. Service may be needed sooner depending on environmental conditions or user care.
    • Service Registration: For each service, the Authorized Sherwood Scuba Dealer is required to register the service at www.SherwoodScuba.com. Divers should request a copy of this registration for their records.
    • Rental/Training Use: Regulators used for rental or training purposes require complete overhaul and factory-prescribed service every three to six months due to increased wear and exposure to damaging environments like chlorinated swimming pool water.
  • Unauthorized Service: Sherwood regulators must not be serviced by untrained individuals. Any service or repair procedures must be performed by an Authorized Sherwood Dealer. Disassembly or modification of the equipment is strictly prohibited, as improper service can lead to malfunction, serious personal injury, or death.

Warranty Information:

  • Limited Lifetime Warranty: Sherwood Scuba offers a limited lifetime warranty to the original purchaser, covering defects in workmanship and materials for the lifetime of the regulator.
  • Proof of Purchase: Proof of purchase from an Authorized Sherwood Dealer is required to use the warranty.
  • Warranty Coverage: Sherwood will repair or replace, at its sole option, any original parts that fail to perform as intended.
  • Exclusions: The warranty excludes products subject to abuse, neglect, alterations, or improper unauthorized service. It also excludes wear parts such as hoses, mouthpieces, seals, and metal parts with mild corrosion from seawater exposure.
  • Labor Costs: Under the warranty, Sherwood replaces warranted parts, but labor costs for replacement are excluded and are the owner's responsibility.
  • Warranty Maintenance: To maintain the Parts Warranty, each inspection and service must be registered by an Authorized Dealer at www.SherwoodScuba.com.
  • Restrictions:
    • Does not cover normal wear.
    • Requires annual factory-prescribed service by an Authorized Sherwood Scuba Dealer.
    • Does not cover damages from improper use, maintenance, neglect, unauthorized repairs, modifications, accidents, fire, or casualty.
    • Does not cover cosmetic damage (scratches, dents, nicks).
    • Does not extend to equipment used for rental, commercial, or military purposes.
    • Covers products purchased in the United States; for other regions, contact the local representative.
    • Failure to meet these requirements voids the warranty.
