Stop System for the MKV 510, but can also be
used with Mark V 500 Fence (555646) and the
Bandsaw Fence (555645). 555808 is the Fence
Stop System for the MKV 520.
The stop is a flip stop design, when not re-
quired it can be flipped up, without losing the
stop postition. You can also purchase extra
fence stops, these packages only include the
fence stop:

Do you have a question about the Shopsmith MKV 510 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Shopsmith Fence Stop System, available in two models—555807 for the MKV 510 and 555808 for the MKV 520—is designed to enhance precision and repeatability in woodworking operations. This accessory mounts directly into the t-slot of a rip fence, allowing users to accurately position a stop for consistent cuts, drilling, and other repetitive tasks.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Fence Stop System is to provide a reliable and repeatable stop point along a rip fence. This is achieved through a flip-stop design, which allows the stop lever to be engaged for precise positioning or flipped up and out of the way when not needed, without losing the set position. This feature is particularly useful for operations requiring multiple identical pieces or for quickly switching between different cut lengths. The system streamlines repetitive motions, making setup and execution more efficient.

Compatibility:

The 555807 model is specifically designed for the MKV 510 Fence Stop System but is also compatible with the Mark V 500 Fence (part number 555646) and the Bandsaw Fence (part number 555645). The 555808 model is designed for the MKV 520 Fence Stop System. This broad compatibility ensures that users with various Shopsmith machines can benefit from the system's precision.

Key Components and Assembly:

The Fence Stop System comprises several key components:

  • Flat Washer (513865): Used in various assembly points for secure fastening.
  • Knob (521662): Used to secure the T-nut assembly to the stop block and the fence track extrusion.
  • Stop Block (521709): The main body of the stop, to which the stop lever and T-nut assembly are attached.
  • Stop Lever (510) (52171001) / Stop Lever (520) (52171002): The movable arm that acts as the physical stop. The specific lever model depends on the Fence Stop System model (510 or 520).
  • Washer (521711): Used with the knob to secure the T-nut assembly.
  • Screw (521712): Used to attach the stop lever to the stop block.
  • T-nut Assembly (521715): Engages with the t-slot of the rip fence, allowing the stop to be positioned and secured.
  • Washer, PM (521714): Used with screws to secure the fence track extrusion.
  • Extrusion (521716): The track component that slides into the rip fence's t-slot, providing a base for the fence stop.
  • Screw 8-32x3/8 (521795): Used to secure the fence track extrusion.

Assembly involves several steps:

  1. Stop Lever Assembly: The screw (7), flat washer (1), and stop lever (4 or 5) are attached to the stop block (3) using a 5/32" Allen wrench. A critical note here is to back off the screw 1/16 of a revolution after securing, just enough to allow the stop lever to swing freely.
  2. T-nut Assembly to Stop Block: The T-nut assembly (8) is inserted through the stop block (3) and secured with the knob (2) and washer (6).
  3. T-nut Assembly to Extrusion: The T-nut assembly (8) is also assembled through the Fence Track Extrusion (10) and secured with the knob (2) and washer (6).
  4. Extrusion Assembly: Screws (11) are assembled through the countersunk holes in the fence track extrusion (10) and secured with washers (9) using a #2 Phillips Head Screwdriver.
  5. Final Integration: The assembled fence stop is then slid onto the Fence track in the t-slot.

Usage Features:

  • Fence Mounting:
    • For MKV 520, MKV 500 & Bandsaw Fences: The Fence Stop Track assembly slides into the t-slot from either the infeed or outfeed end of the fence.
    • For MKV 510 Fence: The Fence Stop Track assembly slides into the t-slot from the outfeed end only.
  • Stop Setting: To set the stop, the user positions it to the desired measurement, tightens down the track assembly and the stop, and then flips down the stop lever.
  • Flip-Stop Design: The stop lever can be flipped up and out of the way without losing its set position, allowing for quick changes between operations or for clearing the workpiece.
  • Repeatability: The system is designed to make setting up and cutting or drilling a repetitive motion, ensuring consistent results for multiple pieces.

Maintenance Features:

The manual does not explicitly detail maintenance features beyond assembly instructions. However, the robust construction and use of standard fasteners suggest that components can be replaced if worn or damaged. Regular cleaning to prevent sawdust buildup in the t-slots and on the stop mechanism would likely contribute to its longevity and smooth operation.

Safety Information:

The manual emphasizes several critical safety precautions:

  • Read and Understand: Users must read, understand, and follow all instructions in the manual.
  • Eye Protection: Always wear safety equipment, including eye protection.
  • Stock Movement: Use safety equipment to move the stock up to the stop.
  • T-bolt Engagement: Always have a t-bolt and washer engaged in the fence.
  • Backing Up Wood: Do not back the wood up when it reaches the stop. Instead, turn off the machine and remove the stock.
  • T-nut Assembly Engagement: Always ensure the T-nut Assembly is engaged in the fence.

For further assistance, Shopsmith provides a Customer Service Department accessible via a toll-free number (1-800-762-7555 within the United States) or an international number (937/898-6070 x-376). Their website, www.shopsmith.com, is also available for resources. The manual itself is identified as 845511, Rev. 12/00, indicating its revision status.

In summary, the Shopsmith Fence Stop System is a precision accessory designed to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of woodworking tasks requiring repeatable measurements. Its robust design, ease of assembly, and user-friendly flip-stop mechanism make it a valuable addition for Shopsmith users, while clear safety guidelines ensure safe operation.
