Modbus master best practices
In order for your meter to operate as a Modbus master, you must complete some
prerequisite configuration.
NOTE: These settings are required in addition to the serial or Ethernet Modbus
prerequisites.
Prerequisite Description
Modbus slave
devices
All Modbus slave devices must be communicating and appropriately configured.
Protocol • Modbus mastering serial devices: the master’s serial port protocol must be set
to Modbus master.
• Modbus mastering Ethernet devices: the master must be communicating to
the slave devices over Ethernet port 502.
NOTE: Having more than one Modbus master on a serial Modbus network
may cause communication conflicts.
Mastered devices The Modbus master device must have the slave device information entered for
mastering.
Configuring your meter as a Modbus master using ION Setup
You can configure your device to Modbus master slave devices over serial or Ethernet.
