Frontal accidents and laws of
physics
It is easy to explain how the laws of
physics work in the event of a frontal
accident: as soon as the vehicle begins
to move, this creates, both in
the vehicle and in its occupants,
energy called “kinetic energy.”
The magnitude of the “kinetic energy”
mainly depends on the speed, weight
of the vehicle, and weight of the
occupants. The greater the weight,
the greater the energy that must
be “absorbed” in the event of an
accident.
However, the most important factor
is the vehicle’s speed. For example,
if speed doubles, from 25 km/h (15
mph) to 50 km/h (30 mph), the
kinetic energy quadruples.
Given that the vehicle’s occupants in
our example do not have their seat
belts buckled, in the event of collision,
all of the occupants’ kinetic energy
will only be absorbed by this impact.
Even driving at a speed between 30
km/h (19 mph) and 50 km/h (30
mph), the force on the body in an
accident can easily exceed one tonne
(1,000 kg). The force on your body
• Thick, unbuttoned garments (e.g., a
coat over a sweater) make it dicult to
correctly adjust seat belts, so they reduce
their protective capacity.
• Avoid obstructing the fastener with paper
or similar objects, since the buckle cannot
click into place.
• Never modify the position of the seat belt
with pins for the belt, fastener rings, or
similar objects.
• Seat belts with damage to the fabric,
joints, automatic roller, or fastener
can cause serious injury in the event of
accident. For this reason, regularly check
the condition of the seat belts.
• After an accident, go to a specialised
workshop to replace seat belts that have
been excessively loosened due to the strain
they underwent. It may be necessary to
replace them, even if there is no visible
damage. Moreover, you must check the
belt’s points of attachment.
• Never try to repair seat belts on your
own. Seat belts must not be disassembled
or modied in any way.
• The belt must be kept clean, since if it is
very dirty, its automatic roller’s operation
may be jeopardised.

will be thrown forward.
