You must follow applicable law in each
country and the manufacturer’s regulations
for using and mounting car seats.
Classication of car seats in groups
You must only use approved car seats
that are suitable for the child.
Standard ECE-R 44 or ECE-R
129 govern these seats. ECE-R
means: regulation of the Economic
Commission for Europe.
Car seats by weight group
Car seats are classied into 5 groups:
Car seats approved by regulation
ECE-R 44 or ECE-R 129 have the
ECE-R 44 or ECE-R 129 approval mark
(a capital E in a circle and, underneath,
the control number).
Car seats by approval categories
Car seats may be categorised by
universal approval, semi-universal
approval, specic approval for the
vehicle (all according to regulation
ECE-R 44), or i-Size (according to
regulation ECE-R 129).
• Universal: car seats with universal
approval may be mounted in all
vehicles. It is not necessary to
review any list of vehicle makes. For
universal approval for ISOFIX, the
car seat is additionally provided with
a top tether.
• Semi-universal: in addition
to standard universal approval
requirements, semi-universal
approval requires safety devices
to anchor the car seat that require
additional tests. Car seats with semi-
universal approval include a list of
vehicle makes in which they may be
mounted
• Vehicle-specic: specic approval
for a vehicle requires a separate
dynamic test for the car seat for
each vehicle make. Car seats with
vehicle-specic approval also

• i-Size: car seats with i-Size
approval must meet the
requirements set forth in regulation
ECE-R 129 in terms of assembly and
safety. Car seat manufacturers may
indicate which seats have i-Size
approval for this vehicle.
