This document describes the Sofamel HPS-130-C3, a manual hydraulic compression tool designed for crimping connectors.

Function Description

The HPS-130-C3 is a hand-operated hydraulic compression tool used for mounting and assembling connection materials. It features a 130 kN C-shaped crimping head designed for wide crimping dies. The tool operates by pumping a lever (3) to advance the piston, bringing the crimping dies (1) together to compress the connector. The crimping process involves a rapid advance stroke at low pressure and a slower, useful stroke at high pressure. The cycle completes when the dies fully touch and maximum compression force is reached, indicated by a noticeable decrease in manual force. A pressure release mechanism (5) allows the piston to return to its starting position, enabling the removal of the crimped connector or resetting the tool in case of an interruption. The crimping head can be rotated 270° when not under pressure, offering flexibility during operation.

Usage Features

Die Selection: The tool uses interchangeable shell crimping dies (1) with different crimping profiles. Users must select the appropriate pair of dies for the intended application.
Die Insertion: Dies are inserted sideways into the die holders until they engage centrally.
Operation: The crimping process is initiated by operating the pump handle (3). The tool is equipped with a double piston for fast advance and slow working stroke.
Pressure Release: The pressure release (5) allows the piston to retract, enabling the removal of the crimped connector or resetting the tool.
Safety Warnings:
- Never operate the compression tool without dies.
- Never crimp live parts.
- Ensure the connection to be crimped is completely de-energized before starting work.
- Even if the code is identical, only use dies that are suitable for the specific material.
- Do not compress parts under tension.
- Risk of crushing.
- Read the instruction manual before use.

Maintenance Features

Cleaning: The hydraulic compression tool should be cleaned after each use and dried completely before storage to prevent damage.
Lubrication: Generally, the tool requires little maintenance. Only the connecting bolts of the pump lever need occasional lubrication.
Annual Check: It is recommended to send the tool to the manufacturer for inspection after one year of use.
Storage: To protect the tool from damage, it should be stored in its transport case after cleaning. The case can accommodate up to 9 pairs of dies and the instruction manual.
Troubleshooting:
- If the dies stop during compression or the tool does not reach final pressure, return the tool to the manufacturer.
- If the tool loses oil, return it to the manufacturer.
Disposal: The various components of the tool must be disposed of separately. Hydraulic oil must be drained first and taken to special disposal points, as hydraulic oils pose a danger to groundwater, and uncontrolled draining is punishable by law. Remaining parts should be disposed of according to valid environmental regulations, preferably by authorized professional companies to avoid environmental damage. The manufacturer does not offer free take-back of old equipment.

The tool is intended for use by specially trained persons in electrotechnics, with a minimum age of 16 years. The operating instructions must be kept with the tool throughout its lifespan. The operator is responsible for ensuring the instructions are available to and understood by the user. The pump features a label with the type designation, serial number, and technical data. A warranty period of 12 months is provided, subject to proper use.
