Overview

The Soundstream BX-23Q is a Digital Bass Reconstruction Processor designed to enhance and restore low-frequency information in audio signals, providing a more impactful bass experience. It is suitable for a wide range of audio systems, from those in vehicles to home setups, and aims to compensate for bass frequencies lost during the recording process.

Function Description:

The core function of the BX-23Q is Bass Restoration. It employs a dedicated circuit that accurately re-injects low-frequency information back into the signal path, effectively bringing back "long-lost missing bass" with accuracy and clarity. This process aims to give music more bass impact.

Complementing the bass restoration, the device features a Bass Equalization Circuit. This unique circuit allows users to contour the restored bass to match their specific speaker systems, ensuring optimal sound reproduction.

For user convenience, the BX-23Q includes a Dash Mount Remote Control. This external control unit allows for instant adjustments of the bass level from the driver's seat. The remote features an LED indicator that brightens as more bass is added and dims when the gain knob is decreased, providing visual feedback.

The main unit also incorporates a Bass Maximizer Indicator, consisting of three LED indicators on the chassis. These LEDs flash when the bass maximization circuit is active, offering a visual representation of the device's operation.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Maximum Input Level: 15V rms
  • Maximum Output Level: 13.5V peak
  • Frequency Response: 10Hz - 100KHz; +/-1dB
  • Total Harmonic Distortion: 0.003%
  • Signal to Noise Ratio: -130dB
  • Balanced Input Noise Rejection: >60dB
  • Input Impedance: 10K Ohm
  • Output Impedance: 150 Ohm
  • Power Supply: High headroom PWM
  • Power Draw: 150mA
  • Fuse Rating: 1Amp (Included)

Usage Features:

The BX-23Q offers several user-adjustable features to fine-tune the bass response:

  • Para-Bass Controls: These consist of two knobs:
    • SWEEP: This knob allows the user to select a center frequency (between 27 and 63 Hz) that the bass restoration circuit will maximize. This targets the frequency range most affected by the recording process.
    • WIDE: This knob adjusts the width of the frequency range that the BX-23Q will affect, centered around the frequency selected by the SWEEP knob.
  • PFM Subsonic Filter Switch: This switch helps with speaker control and amplifier power management. It offers three frequency selections: 35Hz, 50Hz, and 80Hz. While 33Hz is often a good starting point for most systems, selecting a higher frequency can further protect speakers and may result in a louder and cleaner sound.
  • Bass Output Control Jumpers: Located inside the unit, these jumpers allow users to adjust the signal voltage of the bass maximizer circuit. This feature caters to different system designs, from those focused on SPL (Sound Pressure Level) to more moderate setups. Settings include 2.5 Volts (for 3V or Less amplifier input, 8" Subwoofers), 5.0 Volts (for 5V or Less amplifier input, 10" Subwoofers), 7.5 Volts (for 7V or Less amplifier input, 12" Subwoofers), and 10 Volts (for "OH MY GOSH!!!!!!!!" amplifier input, SPL Type Subwoofers). It is recommended to listen using the factory setting first before making changes.
  • Input Ground Jumper: This internal jumper allows users to select between "BALANCE" and "UNBALANCE" positions. In most systems, the "BALANCE" position is suitable. However, if the source unit seeks ground through the RCA connectors, changing to "UNBALANCE" may be necessary.
  • Ground Isolation Jumper: This internal jumper helps address alternator whine that may occur due to different grounds between source units and amplifiers. Alternative ground connections are provided to mitigate this issue.

Connections:

  • Power Connection:
    • +12V: Connects to battery/constant +12 Volt.
    • Remote: Connects to amplifier turn-on (behind radio or true ignition source).
    • GND: Connects to vehicle chassis (-).
  • RCA Connection:
    • Balanced Input: Connects to the low-level signal from the vehicle's source unit or input converter. Designed to handle extreme signal voltages up to 15 volts.
    • Output: Connects to bass amplifiers, crossovers, or equalizers. RCA cables are not included and must be purchased separately.
  • Dash Remote: Connects to the provided dash level controller for remote bass adjustments.

Maintenance Features:

The manual provides a Troubleshooting Guide to assist users with common issues:

  • No Power/LED Not Illuminated:
    • Check for reversed B+ and GND connections.
    • Verify correct power wire connection and appropriate voltage (11-16 volts).
    • Ensure the fuse is functioning correctly.
  • High Audible Distortion or Low Output Volume:
    • Check and adjust input and output levels to match the source and host sensitivity.
    • Verify crossover settings; for high "Q" systems, set the crossover half an octave above the desired point, and for low "Q" systems, one octave or more above.
  • Whining or Engine Noise:
    • Confirm a secure GND connection, ensuring the wire is not too thin or unnecessarily long.
    • Check that the +12V wire is not too thin or unduly long.
    • Try connecting to a different power source.
