Overview

This document provides operating instructions and a parts manual for Speedaire® Die Grinders, covering models 21AA82, 21AA84, 21AA85, 21AA86, 21AA87, 21AA88, 21AA92, and 21AA93.

Function Description

Speedaire® die grinders are designed for various high-speed applications, including cleaning tire molding, porting, and general polishing and grinding in confined areas. These tools are engineered for efficiency and user comfort, featuring lightweight construction and reduced operational noise.

Important Technical Specifications

The manual details several key technical specifications for each model:

Model No. Free Speed (RPM) Collet Size (Inch) Horsepower (HP) Air Inlet (NPT) Hose Size (Inch) Average Air Consumption (CFM) Length (Inch) Weight (Lbs)

21AA93 70,000 1/8 0.1 1/4" 1/4 1.5 7-1/8 0.31

All models are recommended for operation at 90 PSI (6.2 Bar) air pressure.

Usage Features

The Speedaire® die grinders incorporate several features designed for enhanced usability and safety:

  • Built-in Comfort Grip: Provides improved handling and reduces user fatigue during extended operation.
  • Adjustable Air Regulator: Allows users to control the tool's speed and power to suit different applications.
  • Safety Throttle Lever: Designed to prevent accidental activation, enhancing user safety.
  • Rear Exhaust with Silencer: Directs exhaust air away from the workpiece and operator, while also reducing operational noise levels.
  • Lightweight Units: Contributes to ease of handling and maneuverability, especially in confined spaces.

For optimal operation, the manual emphasizes the importance of a clean, dry, and lubricated air supply at the proper pressure (90 PSI). It also specifies that only mounted wheels or tire buffing accessories with adequate speed ratings and correct shaft diameters should be used, ensuring that the grinding accessory's rated speed is equal to or greater than the die grinder's speed. Connecting the tool to the air line should be done using appropriate pipe, hose, and fitting sizes, avoiding direct quick coupler installation into the grinder throttle handle.

Maintenance Features

The manual outlines critical maintenance aspects to ensure the longevity and safe operation of the die grinders:

  • Piping System: Air mains and lines should be adequately sized to prevent excessive pressure loss. They must be equipped with means to drain or trap water, such as traps or water legs, which should be regularly drained. Automatic traps can be used but require regular inspection to prevent air waste. Down pipes or hose connections should not be taken directly from the bottom of air pipes or mains to prevent condensed moisture from reaching the tools.
  • Air Regulators: Essential for maintaining the correct air pressure.
  • Lubrication: An air line lubricator with Mobil Almo 525 air tool oil (model 3ZF22) adjusted to two (2) drops per minute is recommended. If a lubricator is not feasible, air motor oil should be added to the inlet once daily.
  • Moisture Elimination: Compressors should have intercoolers, aftercoolers, and full-size receivers, kept drained and in good working condition, to minimize moisture in the compressed air. The compressor intake should be located in the coolest, driest, and cleanest air available, preferably outdoors on the north side of the building, with proper screening and protection.
  • Troubleshooting: A dedicated section addresses common issues:
    • Moisture in exhaust: Indicates water in the tank, requiring drainage and re-lubrication.
    • Slow or inoperative tool: Could be due to grit/gum in the tool (flush with air tool oil or gum solvent) or lack of oil (lubricate as per instructions).
    • Low air pressure: Requires adjusting the regulator setting on the tool or the compressor regulator to its maximum 90 PSI setting.
    • Air hose leaks: Check fittings, connections, and the air hose itself.
    • Air pressure drops: Ensure the hose is the proper size (e.g., 1/2" I.D. for long hoses or tools using large air volumes) and avoid multiple hoses connected with quick-connect fittings, which cause pressure drops.
    • Worn rotor blade: Requires replacement.
    • Worn ball bearing: Inspect for rust, dirt, or grit; replace or clean and grease as needed.

The manual also emphasizes general safety information, including wearing impact-resistant eye and face protection, hearing protection, and avoiding loose clothing or jewelry due to entanglement hazards. It warns about workplace hazards like slips/trips/falls and the risks associated with inhaling dust or handling debris from the work process, recommending dust extraction and respiratory protective equipment. The document highlights that some dust created by grinding activities may contain chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm, advising work in well-ventilated areas and use of approved safety equipment.
