Steinberger DB-Tuner Bass Bridge™ Instructions
Congratulations on your purchase of the patented Steinberger DB-Tuner! A breakthrough for
contemporary bassists, the DB-Tuner system extends the range of the E string.
A flip of the patented DB-lever allows you to de-tune to any pre-set alternate tuning from Eb down
to B, including the popular D. Another flip of the DB lever returns the E string to normal pitch!
HOW TO ADJUST DB-TUNER:
1. Push De-Tuning lever all the way forward (towards the neck) and tune the E string with the
normal tuning knob (located at back end of tuner)
2. Flip-up De-Tuning lever to back position and use de-tuning knob (on top of tuner) to set lower
pitch. Although D is generally preferred, your patented Steinberger DB-Tuner unit will de-tune to
any lower pitch down to low B if desired.

Overview

The Steinberger DB-Tuner Bass Bridge is a patented system designed to extend the range of a bass guitar's E string, offering enhanced versatility for contemporary bassists. This innovative device allows for quick and precise de-tuning of the E string to various lower pitches, and equally swift return to standard E tuning.

Function Description:

The core function of the DB-Tuner is to provide an alternate tuning capability for the E string. By manipulating a patented DB-lever, bassists can instantly switch between standard E tuning and a pre-set lower tuning. The system supports de-tuning to any lower pitch from Eb down to low B, including the popular D tuning. This on-the-fly tuning adjustment is achieved through a two-knob system: a normal tuning knob for standard E tuning and a de-tuning knob for setting the lower pitch.

Usage Features:

  1. Standard E Tuning: To tune the E string to its standard pitch, the DB-Tuning lever must be pushed all the way forward (towards the neck). In this position, the normal tuning knob, located at the back end of the tuner, is used for adjustment. This ensures the instrument performs in a conventional manner when the DB-Tuner is not actively engaged for de-tuning.

  2. De-Tuning to Lower Pitch: To activate the de-tuning function, the DB-Tuning lever is flipped up to its back position. Once the lever is in this position, the de-tuning knob, located on top of the tuner, is used to set the desired lower pitch. The system allows for a wide range of lower tunings, from Eb down to low B, providing flexibility for various musical styles and requirements.

  3. Instant Return to E: A key feature of the DB-Tuner is its ability to return the E string precisely to its original tuning with a single flip of the DB-lever back to the forward position. This rapid transition is crucial for live performance and quick changes between songs.

Maintenance Features:

The Steinberger DB-Tuner offers several adjustment points to ensure optimal performance and playability. These adjustments are typically performed using hex-head (Allen) wrenches of specific sizes.

  1. Friction Adjustment for De-Tuning Knob: The friction of the de-tuning knob can be easily adjusted. A 1.5 mm hex-head (Allen) set screw is located on the side of the tuner, just behind the lever. Adjusting this screw allows the user to control the resistance of the de-tuning knob, ensuring smooth and stable operation.

  2. Friction Adjustment for De-Tuning Lever: Similarly, the friction of the de-tuning lever itself can be adjusted. A 1.5 mm hex-head (Allen) set screw for the lever's friction is located on the back of the tuner, just to the side of the normal tuning knob. Proper adjustment ensures the lever moves smoothly yet holds its position securely. Both the lever and the knob should have a slight friction for smooth, stable operation.

  3. String Action Adjustment:

    • Loosening Locking Screw: To adjust the string height (action), a locking Allen or hex set screw on the side of the bridge must first be loosened. A 2mm Allen wrench is required for this step.
    • Adjusting String Height: Once the locking screw is loose, setscrews located on top of the saddles can be turned to raise or lower the string height.
    • Tightening Locking Screw: After the desired string height is achieved, the locking setscrew must be tightened to secure the adjustment.
  4. Intonation Adjustment:

    • Loosening Locking Screw: For intonation adjustments, the locking setscrew on the side of the bridge must be loosened, similar to string action adjustment.
    • Sliding Saddles: The saddles can then be slid forward or backward to adjust the string length.
    • Pitch Correction: If the pitch at the 12th fret is sharp, the saddle should be moved back (away from the neck). If the pitch is flat at the 12th fret, the saddle should be moved forward (towards the neck). This ensures accurate pitch across the fretboard.

Important Technical Specifications and Usage Notes:

  • Tuning Knob Usage: It is critical to use the correct tuning knob for the intended function. The NORMAL tuning knob (located at the back/end of the bridge) is exclusively for tuning to E when the lever is in the forward position. The de-tuning knob (on top of the tuner) is exclusively for tuning to the lower pitch when the lever is in the back position.
  • Range of De-Tuning: The DB-Tuner allows de-tuning to any lower pitch from Eb down to low B. While D is a commonly preferred alternate tuning, the system's flexibility accommodates a broader range of musical needs.
  • Patented Design: The Steinberger DB-Tuner incorporates a patented design, highlighting its unique engineering and functionality in the realm of bass guitar hardware.

In summary, the Steinberger DB-Tuner Bass Bridge is a sophisticated and user-friendly system that significantly enhances the sonic capabilities of a bass guitar by providing instant access to alternate E string tunings. Its robust design, coupled with accessible adjustment features, ensures both reliable performance and ease of maintenance for bassists seeking extended range and versatility.
