This document describes the Streetwize 6/12 Volt 8 Amp & 12 Amp Battery Chargers (models SWBCG8 and SWBCG12), designed for charging lead-acid batteries.
Function Description
The Streetwize Battery Chargers are heavy-duty devices designed to recharge 6-volt and 12-volt lead-acid batteries. They are suitable for use with a variety of vehicles and equipment, including cars, motorcycles, motorhomes, marine vessels, and lawnmowers. The chargers feature an Amp Meter to indicate the charging rate, which decreases as the battery approaches full charge. They are equipped with reverse polarity protection to prevent damage if the leads are connected incorrectly. A temperature-sensitive switch provides an automatic cut-off mechanism in case of overload or excessive heat, with the unit resuming operation once it has cooled down.

Usage Features
Operating Instructions:
- Battery Disconnection: Disconnect the battery from the vehicle to prevent damage to the alternator. It is advisable to remove the battery from the vehicle to avoid spillage.
- Battery Preparation (Non-Maintenance Free/Sealed): For non-maintenance free batteries, remove cell caps, ensure liquid is at the recommended level, and top up with distilled or de-ionised water if needed (always wear protective gloves). Allow gases to escape before replacing caps. For AUTOFIL type batteries (Dagenite or Exide), glass balls and the long filler cap must remain in place during charging.
- Connection Order: DO NOT plug the charger into the mains until crocodile clips are correctly connected.
- Connect the positive (+ Red) charging lead to the positive (+ Red) terminal.
- Connect the negative (- Black) charging lead to the negative (- Black) terminal.
- Ensure good contact between clips and terminals.
- Power On: Plug the charger into a fused AC mains plug socket.
- Charging Indication: The Amp Meter needle will point to the right when charging begins. As the battery charges, the rate will drop, and the needle will move to the left, indicating the battery is fully charged when the needle is constant on the left. Note that the Amp Meter needle will never drop to zero.
- Reverse Polarity Protection: If leads are connected incorrectly, the Amp Meter needle will swing back and forth continuously. Immediately unplug the charger and reverse the connection.
- Disconnection: To disconnect, first switch off the mains supply and unplug the charger. Caution: Due to the risk of explosive gas, only disconnect the crocodile clips after the mains are disconnected.
- Post-Charge: Check fluid levels, top up if necessary, and wipe the battery clean. If removed, replace and reconnect the battery in the vehicle.
Safety Instructions:
- Always follow basic safety principles to reduce risks of injury, electric shock, and fire.
- Keep the charger in a dry place and out of reach of children. Avoid damp or wet areas.
- Inspect the charger's plug, cables, and crocodile clips before each use.
- Do not open the charger; it contains no serviceable parts.
- Charge in a well-ventilated area, away from naked flames and sparks, as bubbling battery liquid releases flammable gas.
- Do not leave the charger unattended for long periods during operation.
- Avoid contact with battery acid (electrolyte) as it causes burns. Rinse immediately with cold water and seek medical advice if contact occurs.
- The Amp Meter needle may not indicate if connected to a fully charged battery.
- This device is not intended for use by persons with reduced physical, sensory, or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, unless supervised or instructed by a responsible person.
Maintenance Features
Battery Maintenance:
- Regularly check your car battery throughout the year, especially in winter.
- Use a hydrometer to check battery cells. A lower reading in any cell may indicate a fault, requiring a battery check or replacement.
- Ensure battery terminals have good, tight connections, as a loose connection can mimic a flat battery.
- The charger contains a temperature-sensitive switch that automatically cuts off when overloaded or excessively hot, and will switch back on after cooling.
Troubleshooting:
- If the battery charger does not work initially, replace the "flat" blade car-type fuse located on the base of the charger with the spare blade fuse provided.
Warranty:
- A 12-month warranty is provided. It must be activated within 30 days of purchase by visiting www.streetwizeaccessories.com and entering details on the warranty screen.
