Overview

The Summer Infant Deluxe Stairway Simple to Secure Wood Gate, model 07950B, is a safety gate designed for use with children aged 6 to 24 months. Its primary function is to create and maintain a secure environment, particularly at the top of stairs, for children and pets. The gate is designed to fit openings ranging from 30 to 48 inches wide.

Function Description:

The gate operates with a simple squeeze-and-slide mechanism for opening and closing. To open, the user squeezes the handle and slides the gate out of the Latch Catches. To close, the handle is squeezed, and the gate is slid until the handle engages and locks into the Top Latch Catch. For removal from an opening, the gate is swung open until it is perpendicular to the opening, then lifted out of the Hinge Brackets.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model Number: 07950B
  • Age Range: 6 to 24 months
  • Opening Width: 30" - 48" wide
  • Tools Required (included): Wrench
  • Tools Required (not included): Phillips-head screwdriver, drill
  • Hardware Kit #07954-10 includes: Support Foot Assembly, Precision Fit Template, One-Direction Stops (2), Hinge Brackets (3), Stopper, Top Latch Catch, Bottom Latch Catch, Support Foot Fasteners, Short Screw, Long Screws (8), Wall Anchors (8), and Wrench.
  • Materials: Wood (gate panel), various hardware components.
  • Assembly: Adult assembly required.

Usage Features:

The gate is designed for secure installation, particularly at the top of stairs. A crucial safety instruction emphasizes positioning the gate a minimum of 3-6 inches (8-15cm) away from the top step when installed at a landing. The gate includes a "Precision Fit Template" to aid in accurate installation, ensuring proper spacing from the floor and wall.

The installation process involves several steps:

  1. Attaching the Support Foot Assembly to the bottom of the gate using Support Foot Fasteners.
  2. Using the Precision Fit Template with Hinge Brackets to mark the desired wall location, ensuring the template touches the floor to limit gate spacing.
  3. Marking the wall through the holes of the Upper and Lower Hinge Brackets.
  4. Pre-drilling holes (3/32" or 2.4 mm bit) and attaching the Lower Hinge Bracket to the wall using a Phillips head screwdriver and Long Screws. This step is repeated for the Upper Hinge Bracket.
  5. Removing the Precision Fit Template and attaching the Upper and Lower Hinge Bolts on the gate to the Hinge Brackets on the wall.
  6. Snapping the Top Latch Catch to the gate handle and extending the gate outward until the latch touches the wall.
  7. Marking the wall through the top and bottom holes of the Top Latch Catch, then removing the latch from the gate handle. The latch is then aligned with the marks on the wall, and a One-Direction Stop is placed behind it, ensuring the "protrusion" is on the stair side of the opening to prevent the gate from swinging over the stairs.
  8. Pre-drilling holes (3/32" or 2.4mm bit) and attaching the Top Latch Catch using a Phillips head screwdriver and Long Screws.
  9. Sliding the Bottom Latch Catch into place and repeating the marking and attachment steps.
  10. Swinging the gate closed and extending it until the handle is engaged.
  11. Placing the Stopper on top of the gate panel closest to the hinge side, with its location determined by the width of the included wrench head. The Stopper must be on the stairway side of the gate to prevent it from opening over the stairs.
  12. Pre-drilling a hole (3/32" or 2.4 mm bit) and attaching the Stopper using a Phillips head screwdriver and a short screw.
  13. Adjusting the Support Foot to gently contact the floor when the gate is closed and locked.

For mounting into wallboard, wall anchors (included) must be used. This involves pre-drilling a 7/32" or 5.5 mm hole and gently tapping the wall anchors until their heads are flush with the wall before inserting screws. If mounting to other surfaces, appropriate hardware must be purchased.

A critical safety note states that the gate should NEVER open over the stairs. The One-Direction Stops are essential for this function. It is also important to ensure that no gap between the sides of the gate and the opening, or between the bottom of the gate and the floor, exceeds 3 inches. Hinge bolts can be extended to accommodate the maximum 48" opening and must be locked in place with the wrench once adjusted.

Maintenance Features:

  • Hardware Check: Regularly check all hardware to ensure the gate is securely in place.
  • Damage Inspection: Do not use the gate if any components are damaged or missing.
  • Cleaning: Wipe the surface with a damp cloth or sponge using mild detergent and warm water, then towel dry.
