Overview

The Taco On Command is a hot water recirculation system designed for easy pre-fabricated installation in existing homes with standard piping. It is available for models 006-CT-USK and 008-CT-USK. The primary function of the device is to provide instant hot water at fixtures, thereby saving energy and water by eliminating the need to run water until it heats up.

Function Description:

The Taco On Command system utilizes a "00" Cartridge circulating pump with built-in On Command Electronics, a power cord, an Integral Flow Check (IFC), and a mounting bracket. It also includes a starter button, and for "USK" models, a set of two 1/2" plumbing adapter tees and two 1/2" stainless steel flex lines. The system is designed to be installed at the fixture farthest away from the water heater, typically in the kitchen or master bathroom. If the hot water supply runs in two different directions from the water heater, more than one Taco On Command unit may be required.

The core of the system's operation lies in its state-of-the-art electronics, which accurately sense temperature and automatically shut off the pump to maximize comfort and energy savings. The patented Integral Flow Checks (IFC) are built into each pump to prevent cold water from entering the hot water line, ensuring that only hot water is circulated.

The "on-command" start feature allows the circulating pump to operate only when there is a request for hot water, as opposed to automatic timer-controlled systems. This manual starter button maximizes energy savings. When the On Command is operating, a green LED located on the pump motor housing will illuminate, indicating that the pump is activated and circulating water. The pump will automatically shut off once a rise in temperature is detected by the thermal sensor, or when the hot water temperature reaches a satisfactory level (below 100°F for testing purposes).

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Models: 006-CT-USK, 008-CT-USK
  • Power Supply: 110V electrical outlet (a new outlet may need to be installed if one is not available, in accordance with local electrical codes).
  • Pump Type: "00" Cartridge circulating pump with built-in On Command Electronics.
  • Flow Control: Patented Integral Flow Checks (IFC) to prevent cold water from entering the hot water line.
  • Temperature Sensing: Thermal sensor for automatic pump shut-off based on temperature rise.
  • Plumbing Connections: Designed for 1/2" copper hot and cold supply lines. Includes 1/2" plumbing adapter tees and 1/2" stainless steel flex lines for "USK" models. Teflon tape is recommended for 1/2" threaded fittings.
  • Pump Position: Must be installed in a horizontal position with the On Command capacitor box facing up toward the sink. The arrow on the pump casing must point from left to right (hot water to cold water side).
  • Starter Button Hole Size: 5/8" diameter.
  • Wireless Remote Kit (Optional): Model #554-1 (transmitter/receiver kit) and #554-2 (additional transmitter buttons). The receiver does not require batteries and wires directly to the controller. The transmitter uses a battery. The range of the transmitter is approximately 70 feet. Jumper pins allow changing the signal frequency if multiple units are in close proximity.

Usage Features:

  • On-Demand Hot Water: The primary benefit is instant hot water at the tap, eliminating waiting time and reducing water waste.
  • Energy Savings: The "on-command" activation ensures the pump only runs when hot water is requested, preventing unnecessary circulation and energy consumption compared to timer-based systems.
  • Water Savings: By providing hot water quickly, the system reduces the amount of cold water that runs down the drain while waiting for hot water to arrive.
  • Easy Installation: The pre-fabricated design and custom adapter tees simplify installation for standard 1/2" copper hot and cold supply lines.
  • Visual Indicator: A green LED on the pump motor housing illuminates when the pump is active, providing a clear visual cue of operation.
  • Multiple Activation Points (Optional): Additional wired starter buttons can be installed in other locations throughout the house, or a wireless remote kit (Model #554-1) can be used for convenient activation from various points.
  • Quiet Operation: The system is designed to operate without significant noise.

Maintenance Features:

  • Durable Components: Manufactured using high-quality component parts for a long life expectancy, typically over 15 years.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: The manual includes a comprehensive troubleshooting section to diagnose and remedy common issues such as the pump not running, water not hot enough, hot water at the cold water tap, or the pump shutting down too soon.
  • Technical Support: Contact information (401-942-8000) is provided for assistance with resetting sensitivity settings or other technical inquiries.
  • Warranty: A limited warranty statement covers repair or replacement of defective Taco 00 Series circulators or parts under normal use within three years from the date of manufacture. The warranty is voided if the product is not installed or operated in conformity with Taco instructions, or if subjected to misuse, misapplication, or certain chemical additives.

Important Considerations:

  • Electrical Safety: Always disconnect power before working on electrical connections. Do not apply mechanical loads to the capacitor box.
  • Plumbing Safety: Turn off the main water supply and relieve pressure before beginning plumbing work. Use caution when removing valves on hot water lines to prevent scalding.
  • Water Flow Direction: Ensure the pump is installed correctly with the arrow on the casing pointing from the hot water side to the cold water side.
  • Water in Pump: Do not run the circulating pump without water, as this can damage internal components and void the warranty.
  • Optimal Performance: Using the T's and flex lines supplied by Taco is recommended for maximum flow and performance; alternative plumbing parts may restrict flow.
