Do you have a question about the Tasco VLRF 600 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Tasco VLRF 600 is a laser rangefinder designed for outdoor enthusiasts, offering accurate distance measurement with a single-button operation. This device emits invisible, eyesafe infrared energy pulses and uses digital technology to instantaneously calculate distances by measuring the time it takes for each pulse to travel from the rangefinder to the target and back.

Function Description:

The primary function of the Tasco VLRF 600 is to measure distances to targets. It provides accurate range performance to +/- one yard. The rangefinder can measure distances to a deer as far as 200 yards (182 meters) and to a tree up to 400 yards (366 meters) for a reference point. For highly reflective objects, the maximum range extends to 600 yards (549 meters). The ranging accuracy is plus or minus one yard under most circumstances.

To operate, the user looks through the monocular and depresses the power button once to activate the in-view display system (LCD). The device should be aimed at a target at least 10 yards away. The user then depresses and holds the power button down until the range reading is displayed. Releasing the power button will keep the LCD active and display the last distance measurement for 30 seconds. The power button can be pressed again at any time to measure the distance to a new target.

The unit of measure can be toggled between yards and meters. To do this, with the unit off, the user presses and holds the POWER button down for approximately 5 seconds while looking through the eyepiece. During this time, all liquid crystal segments and icons will be displayed. As the button remains depressed, the display will toggle between Yards and Meters. Once the desired unit of measure is displayed, releasing the power button sets it. The device will remember the last unit of measure setting each time it is turned on.

Usage Features:

The Tasco VLRF 600 incorporates an LCD with illuminated indicators for various statuses:

  • Unit of Measure: Displayed in the lower right portion of the LCD.
  • Laser Active Indicator: Shows when the laser is active.
  • Battery Charge Indicator: A battery icon within the display shows the battery life:
    • Full charge: Four solid bars.
    • 2/3 battery life remaining: Three solid bars.
    • 1/3 battery life remaining: Two solid bars.
    • Battery Indicator Blinks: Battery needs to be replaced, and the unit will not be operable.
  • Target Acquired Indicator: Shows when a target has been successfully acquired.

The rangefinding capability is influenced by several factors:

  • Target Reflectivity: Brighter colors and shiny finishes provide longer ranges. Red is highly reflective, while black is the least reflective.
  • Target Size and Shape: Small targets are more difficult to range than larger ones.
  • Angle to Target: Shooting at a 90-degree angle (perpendicular to the emitted energy pulses) provides good range. Steep angles limit ranging.
  • Lighting Conditions: Less ambient light (e.g., overcast skies) increases the unit's maximum range, while very sunny days decrease it.

Maintenance Features:

  • Battery Installation: To insert the battery, remove the battery cap by rotating the screw counter-clockwise and lifting the battery door. Insert an Alkaline 9-volt battery into the compartment and attach the battery connectors. It is recommended to replace the battery at least once every 12 months.
  • Cleaning:
    • Gently blow away any dust or debris from the lenses, or use a soft lens brush.
    • To remove dirt or fingerprints, use a soft cotton cloth and rub in a circular motion. Avoid coarse cloths or unnecessary rubbing, which can scratch the lens surface.
    • For a more thorough cleaning, photographic lens tissue and photographic-type lens cleaning fluid or isopropyl alcohol can be used. Always apply the fluid to the cleaning cloth, never directly on the lens.

Troubleshooting:

  • Unit does not turn on / LCD does not illuminate:
    • Depress the power button.
    • Check and, if necessary, replace the battery.
  • Unit powers down (display goes blank when attempting to power the laser):
    • The battery may be weak or low quality. Replace it with a good quality alkaline battery. Heavy Duty alkaline batteries are NOT recommended.
  • No reset button to clear last range reading: The last range reading does not need to be cleared. Simply aim at the new target using the LCD's reticle, depress the power button, and hold until a new range reading is displayed.
  • Target range cannot be obtained:
    • Ensure the LCD is illuminated.
    • Ensure the power button is being depressed.
    • Make sure nothing (e.g., hand or finger) is blocking the objective lenses (the lenses closest to the target) that emit and receive the laser pulses.
    • Ensure the unit is held steady while depressing the power button.
