IV:1. 1040 EXTRACTION UNIT (Fig. F)
In the Extraction Unit the fat extraction is done in two steps.
First the thimble with sample is immersed in the boiling sol-
vent. Most of the fat now dissolves in the solvent. In the sec-
ond stage the thimble is raised above the solvent surface and
the fat residue in the sample is washed out by the solvent
dropping from the condenser.
After the extraction the knob above the condenser is turned
clockwise. This will close the outlet for condensing solvent.
After some minutes most of the solvent is collected in the
condenser. The last residue of solvent is evaporated when
the air valve is opened.
IV:2. 1041 SERVICE UNIT
The Service Unit provides hot water to the Extraction Unit
from a built in tank. The thermostat in the tank is adjustable
from the outside of the Service Unit (Fig. E). The hot water is
pumped from the Service Unit to the hot plates in the Extrac-
tion Unit. The pump can work even if the valve on the Extrac-
tion Unit isclosed.
In the Service Unit there is also a pump to give the air flow for
evaporating the solvent.
IV:3. EXTRACTION CUPS AND CUP HOLDER
With the cup hoider all six extraction cups are carried with
one hand when inserting and removing them in the Extrac-
tion Unit, or when moving them to the balance. The extraction
cups are made of aluminium. Never place the extraction cups
on a dirty surface during analysis. This might alter the tare
weight. Before use check that the bottom surface of the cups
is clean, otherwise the heat transfer from the hot platos
might be disturbed and result in longer boiling start time.
