Overview

This document is an operation manual for an external aquarium filter, specifically models HW-302-304, 402B-404B, 403A, and 404A, manufactured by SUNSUN and distributed by Teichtip.de. It provides essential information for the safe and effective use, installation, and maintenance of the device.

Function Description

The external aquarium filter is designed for indoor aquarium use to maintain water quality. It operates by drawing water from the aquarium, filtering it through multiple stages of filter media, and then returning the clean water to the tank. Some models are equipped with a UV lamp for additional water purification. The filter head includes a primer button to initiate water flow and fill the pipework. The filter system incorporates a valve shut mechanism integrated with the inlet and outlet taps. A protective switch automatically turns off the UV unit when the filter base is separated from the filter head, preventing damage.

The filtering process involves several stages:

  1. Mechanical/semi-biological filtering: Typically the first stage, often using bio balls that provide a large surface area for beneficial bacteria and retain coarse dirt.
  2. Biological filtering: Follows mechanical filtration, often using ceramic rings that offer additional surface area for bacterial colonization.
  3. Chemical filtering: The final stage, which can include activated carbon, peat, or phosphate removers (not included by default), used for specific water quality issues like medication removal or turbidity.
  4. Additional stages: The filter can be extended to four stages by adding another mechanical or biological filter stage if needed.

The manual emphasizes that the provided filter media is basic, and users should research suitable materials for their specific aquarium's fish and plants. Filter cotton should be regularly replaced to maintain efficiency. When setting up a new filter or after a thorough cleaning, it's crucial to re-establish beneficial bacteria cultures, which can be facilitated by adding special bacteria cultures.

Important Technical Specifications

The manual provides a table of technical data for various models:

Energy supply: 220–240 V AC, 50 Hz. Protection type: IP44.

Usage Features

  • Installation:
    • The filter head is separated from the filter base by unclipping buckles.
    • Filter trays are accessible for cleaning or adding media.
    • Inlet and outlet taps are pushed into the filter head and secured with a handle that also acts as a valve shut.
    • Hoses are attached to the taps and secured with screw taps.
    • Input downpipes and output spray bars are attached according to the diagram.
    • The primer button on the filter head is pressed to draw water and fill the pipework.
  • UV Lamp (model-dependent):
    • A switch (3) on the filter side turns the UV lamp on/off, with an indicator light.
    • The UV lamp should be checked regularly for optimal performance.
    • A protective switch automatically extinguishes the UV lamp when the filter head is separated from the base.
  • Filter Media: The filter typically includes ceramic rings, filter sponge, filter cotton, and bio balls. These are arranged in layers from bottom to top: bio balls, ceramic rings, filter sponge, and filter cotton. Activated carbon can be added temporarily.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides solutions for common issues such as the primer button not operating, motor not running, inhibited water flow, and abnormal sounds.

Maintenance Features

  • Cleaning Filter Media: Filter trays can be accessed for cleaning filter media. Filter cotton should be regularly renewed.
  • UV Light Tube Replacement (models with UV unit):
    • Open the filter base lid.
    • Reverse the lid, hold the quartz tube, and turn it clockwise.
    • Align the quartz hose tube gap and the light tube connection gap, then pull out the quartz tube.
    • Pull out the old light tube and install a new one, followed by the quartz tube.
  • Hose and Pipe Cleaning: Periodically clean the inside of hoses, intake, and pipes to prevent dirt build-up.
  • O-Ring Maintenance:
    • If leakage occurs, especially after installation or cleaning, check the O-rings on the hose connector adaptor and inside the filter lid.
    • Rinse and inspect O-rings for dirt, displacement, or damage.
    • Ensure the O-ring seating areas are clean and free of algae or sand.
    • If leakage persists, the O-ring seating inside the inlet/outlet adapter may need to be opened and checked.
  • Noise Reduction/External Air: Check suction intake and connected suction surface for tightness and adjust to the aquarium water level. Seal the suction surface to prevent external air from entering the filter.
  • Deaeration: Evacuate air from the filter system by placing the return-flow hose into a bucket below the filter and activating the manual pump until no air bubbles are visible.
  • Impeller/Drive Magnet/Spindle: If the motor does not operate or makes abnormal sounds, check for a broken shaft, missing impeller, or foreign materials. Replace damaged parts as necessary.

The manual also includes general safety instructions, emphasizing the importance of reading and following them to minimize the risk of injury. It advises against self-repair and recommends returning the appliance to an authorized service facility. It also highlights the importance of ensuring the outlet voltage matches the pump rating, unplugging the appliance before maintenance, and using a "drip loop" for electrical cords. The appliance is designed for domestic use only and should be kept in a dry environment, away from freezing temperatures.
