right

create
room for

new
characters.

move

cursor in

tion.

see
how
this
works,
hold
the
FUNC
TIONkey down and pressthe left
arrow

until
the
cursor
is
over
the
letter
N in
the
word
NEW.

OLD.
Notice
what
happened! Sinceyou are
not
in the
insert mode any longer, the word OLDwas
not
inserted between words. Instead,it
simply
re
placed
the
word
NEWasyou typed.

insert
mode,
the
characters thatyou type areaddedto your orig
inal text;
when
you
are
not
in
the
insertmode,
any
characters
that
you
type will replace
the
original text.
