Inlet Region
1. Inlet: autosampler (optional), LC pump (optional),
Syringe pump, divert/inject valve
The sample enters the MS from the inlet.
Mass Spectrometer
2. API source: H-ESI, APCI, or APPI Generates ions.
3. Vacuum system Creates a vacuum for regions 4, 5, 6, and 7.
4. Ion optics In the ion optics and mass analyzer, the scan
functions manipulate the ions.

6. Ion detection systems As the ions strike the dynode detector, they release a
cascade of electrons. These electrons generate a
voltage signal.

8. Monitor The data system processes the voltage signal and
displays it as a graph that can be printed.
