This document is an instruction booklet for the Toastess TSM-22 Combination Panini & Waffle Maker, a versatile kitchen appliance designed for domestic use. The manual is presented in both French and English, indicating its intended market.
Function Description:
The Toastess TSM-22 is a multi-functional appliance that serves as both a panini press and a waffle maker. Its primary function is to cook paninis and waffles using interchangeable cooking plates. The device is designed for ease of use and features non-stick cooking surfaces to facilitate cooking and cleaning.
Important Technical Specifications:
- Model: TSM-22
- Power Requirement: 120V AC outlet
- Plug Type: Grounded plug (2 blades and 1 pin) to reduce the risk of electric shock.
- Cooking Plates: Interchangeable, non-stick coated plates for waffles and paninis.

- Clear indicator light: Illuminates when the unit has preheated to the correct temperature and cycles on and off to maintain the temperature.
- Hinge: Adjustable hinge at the back of the unit for panini making, allowing it to adapt to the thickness of the sandwich.

Usage Features:
General Use:
- Safety First: Users are instructed to read all instructions carefully before use. The appliance should not be immersed in water or other liquids, and close supervision is required when used by or near children.
- Preheating: The unit needs to preheat until the clear indicator light comes on, signaling that the correct temperature has been reached.
- Handle: The handle is designed to remain cool during operation, allowing for safe opening and closing of the lid. All other parts of the unit become very hot during and after cooking.
- Cord Management: A short supply cord is provided to minimize entanglement and tripping hazards. If an extension cord is used, it must have an electrical rating at least as great as the appliance and be a grounded 3-wire cord if the appliance is grounded. It should be arranged to prevent children from pulling on it or tripping over it.
Waffle Making:
- Plate Installation: Ensure the waffle plates are installed before use.
- Batter Quantity: Approximately 1/3 cup (85ml) of batter is recommended for each waffle section.
- Cooking Time: Waffles typically take about 3 minutes to cook, or until no more steam escapes.
- Lid Operation: The lid should not be opened during the first minute of cooking. Crucially, the handle should not be locked during cooking, as this will prevent the waffles from rising.
- Utensils: Only plastic or wood utensils should be used to remove cooked waffles to avoid damaging the non-stick surface.
- Advance Preparation: Waffles can be baked in advance, cooled on a rack, and frozen for up to 2 weeks. They can be reheated in a toaster or toaster oven.
- Batter Storage: Unused waffle batter can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- No Aerosol Sprays: Non-stick cooking sprays should not be used on the non-stick plates.
Panini Making:
- Plate Installation: Ensure the panini plates are installed before use.
- Sandwich Placement: Sandwiches are placed on the bottom panini cooking plate. If sandwiches are too thick, they should be flattened before placement.
- Lid Operation: The lid should be closed gently. The adjustable hinge accommodates different sandwich thicknesses, but users are warned not to force the lid closed if sandwiches are too thick.
- Cooking Time: Cooking time varies depending on the type and thickness of bread and desired doneness. Users can check doneness by lifting the lid.
- Butter/Margarine: While not strictly necessary, a thin coating of butter or margarine on the outer surfaces of the bread can speed up browning and enhance flavor.
- Bread Types: Most types of bread can be used, though breads with high sugar content will brown more quickly.
- No Aerosol Sprays: As with waffles, non-stick cooking sprays should not be used.

The manual includes several recipes for waffles:
- Basic Waffle Recipe (makes 12 waffles)

Maintenance Features:
Changing Cooking Plates:
- Safety: Plates should only be changed when the unit is cold.
- Removal:
- Bottom Plate: Place thumbs on the small tabs in front of the plate and slide them toward you. The plate will pop up and can be lifted out.
- Top Plate: Place hands around the sides of the unit and use thumbs to slide the tabs upward. Ensure hands are in front of the plate to prevent it from falling.
- Installation: Place the grooves at the back of the cooking plate against the metal hinge. Press the plate down at the two corners closest to the locking tabs.
Cleaning:
- Safety: Unplug the unit and allow it to cool completely before cleaning.
- Cooking Plates: Wipe the cooking plates with a sponge or soft cloth dampened with warm, soapy water. Alternatively, the plates can be removed and immersed in water for washing. They must be rinsed and thoroughly dried before re-installation.
- Important Warning: The unit itself should never be immersed in water, and water should not be run directly on the cooking plates if they are installed on the unit.
- Exterior: Wipe the exterior of the panini/waffle maker with a soft, damp cloth and then dry it.
