7.Ifnecessary,removetheballbearingsfromthecoverandhousing.There
are2holesinthecoverandhousingthatallowuseofapinpunchtoremove
thebearings.Discardthebearingsthatwereremoved.
InspectingtheDifferentialAssembly
1.Cleanallthedifferentialcomponents.
2.Inspectallthedifferentialgearscarefullylookingforchippedteeth,wear,
orotherdamage.Becausegeartoothdamageisrarelyisolatedto1gear,
replacethegearsasacompletesetifthereisinternaldamage.
3.Inspectthegearpins(item5inFigure39)forscoringorwear.
4.Replaceallthedifferentialassemblycomponentsthatarewornordamaged.
AssemblingtheDifferentialAssembly
1.Iftheballbearingwasremovedfromeithercoverorhousing,pressnew
ballbearingintothebearingbore.Ensurethatthebearingisfullypressed
totheshoulderofthebore.
2.Placethecover(withthebearinginstalled)ontheworkbench.

Assembly(page4–31))torotatethedifferentialgearsandensurethatthey
rotatefreelywithoutbinding.Ifthereisanybinding,identifyandcorrectthe
causebeforesecuringthecover.
6.Securethecovertothehousingwiththe6socket-headscrews;torquethe
screwsto11.2to13.6N∙m(99to121in-lb).
7.Packthedifferentialhousingcavity20%to30%fullofhightemperature
MobilXHP-222grease(orequivalent).
