ThestartersolenoidusedontheGreensmaster3120allowscurrentowfrom
thebatterytotheenginestartermotorwhenenergized.Thestartersolenoidcoil
shouldenergizewhenboththekillrelay(K1)andthestartsafetyrelay(K2)
areenergized.Thestartersolenoidisattachedtotherearframeinfrontofthe
battery;refertoFigure85.
TestingtheStarterSolenoid
1.Parkthemachineonalevelsurfaceandlowerthecuttingunits.Makesure
theengineisoffandthekeyswitchisintheOFFposition.
2.Disconnectthenegative(-)cablefromthebatteryandthendisconnectthe
positive(+)cablefromthebattery;refertoServicingtheBattery(page5–31).
3.Recordthewireandcableconnectionsatthestartersolenoidforassembly
purposes.Disconnectthewiresandcablesfromthestartersolenoid.
Note:Priortotakingsmallresistancereadingswithadigitalmultimeter,short
themetertestleadstogether.Themeterwilldisplayasmallresistancevalue
(usually0.5ohmsorless).Thisresistanceisduetotheinternalresistance
ofthemeterandtestleads.Subtractthisvaluefromthemeasuredvalue
ofthecomponentyouaretesting.
4.Apply12VDCdirectlyacrossthesolenoidcoilposts;refertoitem3inFigure
85.Thesolenoidshouldclickasthesolenoidcoilisenergized.When
energized,resistanceacrossthemaincontactpostsshouldbelessthan
1ohm.
5.Removevoltagefromsolenoidcoilposts.Thesolenoidshouldclickasthe
solenoidcoilisde-energized.Whende-energized,resistanceacrossthe
maincontactpostsshouldbeinniteohms.Replacethestartersolenoid
ifnecessary.
6.Ifthestartersolenoidtestscorrectlyandacircuitproblemstillexists,check
thewireharnesses;refertoAppendixA(pageA–1).
