Backlapping
DANGER
TO AVOID PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH:
D Never place hands or feet in the reel area
while the engine is running.
D When backlapping, run engine at idle speed
only.
D While backlapping, the reels may stall and
then restart.
D Do not attempt to restart reels by hand or
foot.
D Do not adjust reels while the engine is
running.
D If a reel stalls, stopengine before attempting
to clear the reel.
D Reelmotorsareconnectedinseries:rotating
one motor causes rotation in other motors.

1. Position the machine on a level surface, lower the
cutting units, stop the engine and engage the parking
brake.
2. Remove the console cover to expose controls.
3. Locate the reel speed control and backlap lever on
thehydraulicmowmanifold(Figs.11and12).Rotatethe
reel speed control to position “1” and the backlap lever
to the R (backlap) position.
4. Makeinitialreeltobedknifeadjustmentsappropriate
forbacklappingonallcuttingunitswhicharetobeback-
lapped.
5. Start engine and run at idle speed.
6. Use joystick on the control console to engage the
cutting units.
IMPORTANT: To prevent damage to the reel, do not
rotatethebacklapleverfromthebacklappositionto
the mow position while the engine is running.
7. Apply lapping compound with a long handle brush
(see Special Tools in this chapter) (Fig. 13). Never use
a short handled brush to apply lapping compound.
