TestingtheChargingSystem
Thisisasimpletestthatdeterminesifachargingsystemisfunctioning.Ittells
youifthechargingsystemhasanoutput,butnotitscapacity.
1.UseadigitalmultimetertosetDCvoltsandconnectthepositive(+)
multimeterleadtothepositivebatterypostandnegative(-)multimeterlead
tothenegativebatterypost.Recordthebatteryvoltage.
2.Keepthemultimeterleadsconnectedtothebatterypostsandstartthe
engine.Thebatteryvoltagewhiletheengineiscranking,thenmustincrease
oncetheengineisrunning.
Note:Dependingupontheconditionofthebatterychargeandbattery
temperature,thebatteryvoltageincreasesatdifferentratesasthebattery

3.Starttheengineandrunitathigh-idlespeed(3,550to3,650rpm).Allowthe
batterytochargeforaminimumtimeof3minutesandrecordthebattery
voltage.Afterrunningtheengineforaminimumtimeof3minutes,thebattery
voltagemustbeminimum0.50Vhigherthanthatoftheinitialbatteryvoltage.
