SetthemultimetertotheDCvoltssettings.Thebatterymustbeatatemperature
of16°Cto38°C(60°Fto100°F).EnsurethatthekeyisintheOFFpositionand
alltheaccessoriesareturnedoff.
Connectthepositive(+)multimeterleadtothepositivebatterypostandnegative
(-)multimeterleadtothenegativebatterypost.
Measureandrecordthebatteryvoltage.UsetheBatteryT estT able(page5–6)
todeterminechargelevelofthebattery.
Note:Thistestprovidesarelativeconditionofthebattery.Theloadtestingof
thebatteryprovidesadditionalandmoreaccurateinformation;refertoServicing
theBattery(page5–37).

Thisisasimpletestthatdeterminesifachargingsystemisfunctioning.Ittells
youifthechargingsystemhasanoutput,butnotitscapacity.
1.UseadigitalmultimetertosetDCvoltsandconnectthepositive(+)
multimeterleadtothepositivebatterypostandnegative(-)multimeterlead
tothenegativebatterypost.Recordthebatteryvoltage.
2.Keepthemultimeterleadsconnectedtothebatterypostsandstartthe
engine.Thebatteryvoltagewhiletheengineiscranking,thenmustincrease
oncetheengineisrunning.
Note:Dependingupontheconditionofthebatterychargeandbattery
temperature,thebatteryvoltageincreasesatdifferentratesasthebattery
charges.
3.Starttheengineandrunitathigh-idlespeed(3,550to3,650rpm).Allowthe
batterytochargeforaminimumtimeof3minutesandrecordthebattery
voltage.Afterrunningtheengineforaminimumtimeof3minutes,thebattery
voltagemustbeminimum0.50Vhigherthanthatoftheinitialbatteryvoltage.
RefertotheBatteryVoltageTable(page5–7)foranexampleofaproperly
functioningchargingsystem.
