When the anti−lock brake syst em is ac-
tivated, the fol lowing condi tions may
occur. They do not indi cate a mal func-
tion of the system:
D You may hear the ant i−lock brake sys-
tem oper ating and feel t he brak e pedal
pulsat ing and the vibrat ions of the ve-
hicl e body and s teeri ng wheel. You
may also hear the mot or sound in the
engine c ompartm ent ev en af ter the v e-
hicl e is stopped.
D At t he end of the ant i−lock brake sys-
tem act ivat ion, the br ake pedal may
movealittleforward.
CAUTION
Do not overesti mate the anti −lock
brake syst em: Al though t he anti−lock
brake system assist s in providing ve-
hicle control, it is still important to
drive with all due care and maintain
a moderate speed and safe distance
from the vehicle i n front of you, be-
cause there are limit s to the vehicle
stability and effectiveness of steering
wheel operat ion even wit h the anti−
lock brake system on.
If tir e gr ip performance exceeds its
capability, or if hydroplaning occurs
during high speed driving in the rain,
the anti−lock brake syst em does not
provide vehicle control.
Anti−l ock br ake system is not de-
signed to shorten the st opping dis-
tance: Always drive at the moderate
speed and maint ain a safe distance
from the vehicle in front of you.
Compared wit h vehi cles wi thout an
anti−lock brake syst em, your vehicl e
may r equire a longer stopping di s-
tance in the followi ng cases:
D Dri ving on rough, gravel or snow−
covered roads.
D Driving with tire chains installed.
D Dri ving over the steps such as t he
joints on the road.
D Driving on roads where the road
surface is pi tted or has other dif fer-
ences in surface height.
Instal l all 4 tires of specified size at
appropri ate pr essure: The anti−lock
brake system detects vehicl e speeds
using the speed sensor s for r espec-
tive wheels’ tur ning speeds. The use
of tires other than specified may fail
to det ect the accurat e tur ning speed
result ing in a longer st opping dis-
tance.
