Overview

The Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is a suite of advanced driving assistance systems designed to enhance safety and comfort while driving. It includes several key features that utilize sensors, such as a radar sensor and a front camera, to monitor the vehicle's surroundings and assist the driver.

Function Description:

The Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 encompasses the following driving assist systems:

  • PCS (Pre-Collision System): This system is designed to help reduce the impact to occupants and the vehicle in the event of a collision. It operates under the assumption that the driver will drive safely and provides assistance in normal driving conditions.
  • LTA (Lane Tracing Assist): This system warns the driver if the vehicle may deviate from the current lane or course (boundary between asphalt and the side of the road, such as grass, soil, or a curb). It can also slightly operate the steering wheel to help avoid deviation. When dynamic radar cruise control with full-speed range is active, LTA operates the steering wheel to maintain the vehicle's lane position. LTA recognizes white (yellow) lane lines or a course using the front camera and detects preceding vehicles using both the front camera and radar.
    • Lane Departure Alert Function: When the system determines that the vehicle might depart from its lane or course, a warning is displayed on the multi-information display, and a warning buzzer sounds. If the vehicle has BSM (Blind Spot Monitor), the alert will operate even if turn signals are on, if there's a high possibility of collision with an overtaking vehicle in an adjacent lane.
    • Steering Assist Function: This function provides assistance by operating the steering wheel in small amounts for a short period to keep the vehicle in its lane. If the system detects that the steering wheel has not been operated for a fixed amount of time or is not firmly gripped, a warning is displayed, and the function is temporarily canceled. With BSM, steering assist operates even if turn signals are on, if there's a high possibility of collision with an overtaking vehicle in an adjacent lane.
    • Vehicle Sway Warning Function: If the vehicle is swaying within a lane, a warning buzzer sounds, and a message is displayed on the multi-information display to alert the driver to rest.
    • Lane Centering Function: Linked with dynamic radar cruise control with full-speed range, this function assists by operating the steering wheel to keep the vehicle in its current lane. It operates even in traffic jams or when lane lines are difficult to see, by monitoring the position of a preceding vehicle. Similar to steering assist, if the steering wheel isn't operated for a fixed time or firmly gripped, a warning is displayed, and the function is temporarily canceled.
  • LDA (Lane Departure Alert with steering control): This system is similar to the lane departure alert function of LTA, providing warnings and steering assistance to prevent unintentional lane departure.
  • AHB (Automatic High Beam): This system automatically switches between high and low beams based on traffic and lighting conditions.
  • RSA (Road Sign Assist): This system detects road signs and displays them on the multi-information display.
  • Dynamic radar cruise control with full-speed range: This system maintains a set speed and a safe distance from the vehicle ahead, operating across a full range of speeds.
  • Dynamic radar cruise control: This system maintains a set speed and a safe distance from the vehicle ahead, typically operating within a specific speed range.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Sensors: The system uses two types of sensors:
    • Radar sensor: Located behind the front grille.
    • Front camera: Located behind the windshield.
  • LTA Operation Conditions:
    • LTA is turned on.
    • Vehicle speed is approximately 32 mph (50 km/h) or more (though the lane centering function can operate below this speed if active).
    • System recognizes white (yellow) lane lines or a course (boundary between asphalt and the side of the road, such as grass, soil, or a curb). If only one side is recognized, the system operates for that side only.
    • Traffic lane width is approximately 9.8 ft. (3 m) or more.
    • Turn signal lever is not operated (except with BSM if an overtaking vehicle is present).
    • Vehicle is not being driven around a sharp curve.
    • No system malfunctions are detected.
  • Lane Centering Function Specifics:
    • Requires dynamic radar cruise control with full-speed range to be operating in vehicle-to-vehicle distance control mode.
    • Traffic lane width is approximately 10 to 13 ft. (3 to 4 m).
    • Recognizes white (yellow) lane lines or the position of a preceding vehicle (excluding small vehicles like motorcycles).

Usage Features:

  • Turning LTA System On/Off: Press the LTA switch to toggle the system. The LTA indicator illuminates when on. The system retains its on/off state between engine starts.
  • Multi-Information Display Indications:
    • LTA Indicator: White when LTA is operating, green when steering wheel assistance (steering assist or lane centering) is operating, flashing orange when lane departure alert is operating.
    • Steering Wheel Operation Support Display: Shows steering wheel assistance status. Both outer sides of the lane displayed indicate lane centering is operating. One outer side indicates steering assist is operating. Both outer sides flashing indicate driver input is needed for lane centering.
    • Lane Departure Alert Function Display: Shows displayed lines as white when recognizing white (yellow) lines or a course. The line flashes orange on the side the vehicle departs from.
    • Follow-up Cruising Display: Indicates lane centering is operating by monitoring a preceding vehicle.
  • Customization: Function settings can be changed via the multi-information display.

Maintenance Features:

  • Sensor Cleanliness: Keep the radar sensor and radar sensor cover clean at all times. Clean with a soft cloth to avoid damage.
  • Windshield Cleanliness: Keep the windshield clean at all times, especially the area in front of the front camera. Remove oily film, water droplets, snow, or ice. Use the windshield defogger if fogged up. Replace wiper inserts or blades if water droplets aren't properly removed.
  • Sensor and Camera Protection:
    • Do not attach accessories, stickers (including transparent), or other items to the radar sensor, radar sensor cover, or surrounding area.
    • Do not subject the radar sensor or front camera to strong impact.
    • Do not disassemble or modify the radar sensor or front camera.
    • Do not modify or paint the radar sensor or radar sensor cover.
    • Do not change the installation position or direction of the front camera or remove it.
    • Do not allow bright lights to shine into the front camera.
    • Do not allow glass cleaner to contact the front camera lens when cleaning the windshield's inside. Do not touch the lens.
    • Do not modify any vehicle components around the front camera (rear view mirror, ceiling).
    • Do not attach accessories to the hood, front grille, or front bumper that may obstruct the front camera.
    • Ensure roof-mounted objects (e.g., surfboards) do not obstruct the front camera.
    • Do not modify headlights or other lights.
    • Do not attach window tint to the windshield.
    • Do not allow liquids to contact the front camera.
  • Recalibration:
    • The radar sensor must be recalibrated if it or the front grille is removed, installed, or replaced, or if the front bumper has been subjected to a strong impact.
    • The front camera must be recalibrated after replacing the windshield.
    • Contact a Toyota dealer for these services.
  • Troubleshooting Warning Messages: If warning messages like "LTA Malfunction Visit Your Dealer" or "LTA Unavailable" appear, follow the instructions on the screen or contact your Toyota dealer if the issue persists. "LTA Unavailable at Current Speed" indicates the vehicle speed exceeds the LTA operation range, requiring slower driving.
