Overview

This document describes the TrailFX Ladder Rack, Part No. FCLR004W, a universal 2-crossbar clamp-on ladder rack designed for models with rain gutters.

Function Description

The TrailFX Ladder Rack is designed to provide additional cargo carrying capacity for vehicles, primarily for transporting ladders. It can also be used for transporting other long, bulky materials such as lumber and pipe, provided they are properly secured and do not exceed the rack's capacity or the vehicle's capacity. The rack features a clamp-on design, making it suitable for vehicles with rain gutters, and is intended for easy installation without requiring cutting or drilling.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Part Number: FCLR004W
  • Compatibility: Universal 2-crossbar, clamp-on design for models with rain gutters.
  • Maximum Static Load Capacity: 600 lbs. (when properly installed and load distributed evenly between two complete units).
  • Installation Time: 60-180 minutes.
  • Cutting/Drilling Required: No.
  • Material and Finish Options:
    • Polished Stainless Steel (Limited Lifetime Warranty)
    • Powder Coated Black (3 Years Warranty)
  • Hardware Specifications:
    • (8) 10-1.5mm x 35mm Carriage Bolts
    • (8) 10-1.5mm x 20mm Hex Locking Bolts
    • (12) 10mm x 30mm OD x 2.5mm Flat Washers

    • (12) 10mm Hex Nuts
  • Tightening Torque: Standard operating load for tightening body mount nuts & bolts varies from 45 to 65 foot-pound. Do not overtighten.

Usage Features

  • Clamp-On Design: Facilitates installation on vehicles with rain gutters without the need for permanent modifications like drilling.
  • Adjustable Components: The rack includes slide-in adjustable cross bars (male) that fit into main cross bars (female), allowing for width adjustment to match the vehicle. Load positioner U-bolts are also adjustable to secure cargo.
  • Easy Assembly: The installation process involves attaching clamp plates to cross bars, sliding adjustable cross bars into main cross bars, and then securing the entire assembly to the vehicle's rain gutters.
  • Cargo Securing: Load positioner U-bolts and 2-hole clamp plates are used to secure cargo to the outer cross bar.
  • Safety Guidelines:
    • Ladders must be secured per ANSI standard A14.2-1990 paragraph 8.4.4.
    • The load capacity is significantly affected by the vehicle's design, strength, and capacity, as well as the intended load. The installer/user must determine these factors.
    • Materials must be properly tied down and should not exceed the capacity of the ladder rack or the vehicle.
    • Any modifications or unintended use of the product will void manufacturer's warranties and could create hazardous conditions.

Maintenance Features

  • Periodic Inspections: Regular inspections of the installation are recommended to ensure all hardware is secure and tight.
  • Fastener Checks: Periodically check the product to ensure all fasteners are tight and components are intact.
  • Waxing: Regular waxing is recommended to protect the product's finish.
  • Cleaning:
    • For polished stainless steel finish, use ONLY Non-Abrasive automotive wax. Avoid soaps, polishes, or waxes that contain abrasives, as they can scratch the finish and lead to corrosion. Aluminum polish can be used for small scratches and scuffs.
    • For both stainless steel and black finishes, mild soap may be used for cleaning.
  • Troubleshooting (FAQ's):
    • Incorrect Hardware Size: For GMC/Chevrolet truck models 2006 & up, reuse factory body bolts. For other vehicles, ensure holes are clear of plastic grommets or rust.
    • Improper Mounting Bracket Installation: Refer to the Parts Identification guide, especially if driver/passenger side mounting brackets appear similar.
    • Thumping/Rattling: Ensure all mounting brackets and hardware are installed and tightened correctly. Apply white lithium or regular grease between metal-to-metal contact surfaces.
    • Misalignment: Side bars or step pads not aligning with the vehicle/doors may indicate interchanged side bars or incorrect mounting bracket positions. Refer to the Parts Identification guide.
    • Missing/Excess Hardware: Recheck hardware count against the parts list.
    • Improper Product Installation: Verify vehicle make, model year, cab length, and bed size are listed in the application, and ensure all installation steps are followed correctly.
