Overview

This document is an installer's guide for the "1" - 2" Filter Rack Kit," identified by model numbers BAYFLTR101C and BAYFLTR201C. These filter rack kits are designed for use with specific Trane and American Standard HVAC units, including models 2/4YC*,WC*,TC*,DC018-036A and 2/4YC*,WC*,TC*,DC042-060A. The primary function of this kit is to provide a dedicated housing for air filters within the HVAC system, essential for maintaining indoor air quality and protecting internal components from dust and debris.

Function Description:

The filter rack kit serves as an integral part of the HVAC system's air filtration mechanism. It provides a structural framework to hold air filters, ensuring that all return air passes through the filter before entering the indoor coil. This is particularly crucial when an economizer or any outside air damper is installed, as these components introduce external air that may contain more particulates. The guide explicitly recommends the use of the BAYACCDOR Filter Access Door in conjunction with this filter rack for ease of access and maintenance.

The kit allows for flexibility in filter thickness, accommodating both 1-inch and 2-inch filters. This adaptability is a key feature, as it enables users to choose filters based on their specific filtration needs and system compatibility. The installation process involves securing upper and lower filter channels within the unit, which then hold the filter(s) and a fill plate in place. The fill plate is particularly important for smaller models (018-036) to ensure proper air sealing when using a single filter.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model Numbers: BAYFLTR101C, BAYFLTR201C.
  • Compatibility: Designed for Trane/American Standard units:
    • 2/4YC*,WC*,TC*,DC**018-036A
    • 2/4YC*,WC*,TC*,DC**042-060A
  • Filter Thickness: Supports both 1-inch and 2-inch thick filters.
  • Filter Sizes (by Unit Model):
    • 018-036 Models: Use one 18" x 25" filter (one or two inch).
    • 042-060 Models: Use two 18" x 20" filters (one or two inch).
      • Note: If not using BAYACCDOR Filter Access Door, use one 18" x 20" filter and one 18" x 18" filter (one or two inch).
  • Components: Includes upper filter channel, lower filter channel, and a fill plate (BAYFLTR101C kit only, for 018-036 models).

Usage Features:

The filter rack kit is designed for straightforward installation and integration into existing HVAC systems. The guide provides detailed, step-by-step instructions for installing the filter rack, including how to secure the upper and lower channels. The design ensures that the filter(s) are properly seated to prevent air bypass, thereby maximizing filtration efficiency.

For horizontal unit applications, a specific instruction is provided: the Return Air Panel must remain attached to the unit base pan return opening, and the bottom filter rack channel will sit on top of the Return Air Panel perimeter flange. This detail highlights the kit's adaptability to different unit orientations.

The flexibility to use either 1-inch or 2-inch filters allows users to select filters based on desired MERV ratings and air quality requirements. The provision of a fill plate for smaller units (018-036) ensures that the filter opening is completely sealed, preventing unfiltered air from entering the system.

Maintenance Features:

The design of the filter rack facilitates easy filter replacement, which is a critical maintenance task for HVAC systems. The process involves opening or removing the Filter Access Door, replacing the old filter(s) with new ones, and then closing the door.

The guide also provides clear instructions on how to convert the filter rack from accommodating 1-inch filters to 2-inch filters. This involves removing two screws that secure the 1-inch filter angles to the Upper and Lower Filter Channels and then discarding the angles. This conversion capability enhances the longevity and versatility of the filter rack, allowing it to adapt to changing filtration needs or filter availability without requiring a complete replacement of the rack itself.

Safety Precautions:

The guide includes important safety warnings:

  • Hazardous Voltage: Always disconnect power before servicing to prevent electrical shock.
  • Hazardous Pressures: Coils contain refrigerant under pressure. When attaching filter channel assemblies and filter retainer angles to the coil blank-off plate, use ONLY the holes from which screws were originally removed. Failure to follow this could result in coil bursting, leading to serious injury or death.
  • Sharp Edge Hazard: Exercise caution around sharp edges of equipment or cuts made on sheetmetal during installation or servicing to prevent personal injury.

Overall, the 1" - 2" Filter Rack Kit is a well-designed accessory that enhances the filtration capabilities of compatible Trane and American Standard HVAC units, offering flexibility in filter choice, ease of installation, and straightforward maintenance, all while emphasizing critical safety considerations.
