Handling/
Measurement
Check the correct fit of the rubber
eyecup.
• The refractometer can be used to
rapidly and precisely determine
the content of anti-freeze in the
radiator coolant circulation and
the content of anti-freeze in the
windscreen washer system of your
vehicle. It also offers the possibility
of determining the acid density in
the battery acid of your vehicle bat-
tery. The measuring device must be
adjusted for correct measurement
.
Zero point adjustment
1. Fold up the prism cover [1].
2. Apply several drops of distilled
water to the prism surface [2]
using the supplied pipette [8].
3. Close the prism cover again [1].
Ensure the quantity of liquid used
is sufficient to completely wet
the prism surface after the prism
cover is closed [1].
4. Look through the ocular [4], point
the refractometer with the prism
surface [2] towards a bright
source of light (not directly in the
sun).
5. To focus, rotate the adjusting ring
[5] on the ocular [4].
6. You can see a white and a blue
field in the ocular [4].
The boundary line between the
two fields must be positioned on
the zero point (waterline) [D]. If
the line between both fields is not
exactly on the zero point, remove
the cap of the adjusting screw [3]
and rotate it using the adjusting
tool [6] until the line between
both fields is on the zero point.
Adjustment should be implemen-
ted at room temperature.
Attention! The scales are set for an
ambient temperature of +20 °C!
1. Fold up the prism cover [1].
2. Apply several drops of the liquid to
be measured to the prism surface
[2] using the supplied pipette [8].
3. Close the prism cover again [1].
Ensure the quantity of liquid used
is sufficient to completely wet
the prism surface after the prism
cover is closed [1].
4. Look through the ocular [4], point

surface [2] towards a bright
source of light (not directly in
the sun).
5. To focus, rotate the adjusting ring
[5] on the ocular [4].
6. The boundary line shifts along the
measurement scale according to
the anti-freeze concentration. The
line between both fields directly
indicates the freezing point of the
anti-freeze mixture in °C along the
anti-freeze scale [B]. The values
show the measured value for
propylene (G13) and the measured
value for ethylene (G11 / G12).
If you do not know what type of
anti-freeze has been used or it is a
mixture of both, then the
propylene scale must always be
used. This is the only way to
ensure there is sufficient anti-
freeze protection for the coolant
liquid.
7. The measurement result is not
influenced by the temperature of
the coolant liquid.
8. After measurement, clean the
supplied pipette [8] and the
refractometer carefully.
