Do you have a question about the Vax C85-EW Series and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Vax C85-EW Series is a bagless cylinder vacuum cleaner designed for household use, specifically for cleaning carpets and hard floors. It is not intended for commercial or industrial applications. The vacuum cleaner is designed to be effective and efficient in maintaining the appearance of your home's flooring.

Function Description:

The Vax C85-EW Series operates by creating suction to pick up dirt and debris from various surfaces. It features a dirt container that collects the vacuumed material, eliminating the need for disposable bags. The vacuum is equipped with a motor that generates airflow, and filters (pre-motor and post-motor) to capture dust and allergens, ensuring cleaner exhaust air. The C85-EW-Pe model includes additional accessories like a TurboTool for enhanced cleaning capabilities.

Usage Features:

The vacuum cleaner is designed for ease of use with several features to enhance the cleaning experience:

  • Assembly: The vacuum cleaner requires simple assembly before use. This involves connecting the hose to the hose entry point, inserting the hose grip into the telescopic extension tube, and then attaching the extension tube to the floorhead.
  • Power and Operation: To operate, the power cord must be fully unwound (not pulled beyond the yellow marker) and plugged into a mains socket. The machine is switched on and off using the On/Off button.
  • Floor Type Selection: The C85-EW Series is versatile for different floor types. It features a rocker switch to select between "Carpets" and "Hard Floors" modes. For carpets, the brushes are raised, and for hard floors, they are lowered. For optimal results on hard floors, the combination floorhead can be replaced with the specialist hard floor tool (if included).
  • Suction Control: A slide vent cover on the hose grip allows users to reduce suction if needed, which can be useful for delicate surfaces or when cleaning fabrics.
  • Accessories: The vacuum cleaner comes with a range of accessories to tackle various cleaning tasks:
    • Hose: The primary conduit for suction.
    • Telescopic Extension Tube: Extends reach for high or low areas.
    • Combination Floorhead: A versatile tool for both carpets and hard floors.
    • Crevice Tool: Ideal for cleaning tight spaces and corners.
    • Dusting Brush: Used for dusting delicate surfaces.
    • Upholstery Tool: Designed for cleaning furniture and other upholstered items.
    • Tool Caddy: For convenient storage of accessories.
    • Hard Floor Tool: A specialized tool for efficient cleaning of hard surfaces.
    • TurboTool (C85-EW-Pe model): Specifically designed for vacuuming stairs, upholstery, and car interiors, and effective at picking up stubborn pet hair. A tool connector must be fitted on the hose when using the TurboTool.
  • Storage: After use, the power cord can be retracted by holding the cord rewind button. The floorhead can be placed into a parking slot at the back of the vacuum cleaner for compact storage and easy carrying.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is crucial for the optimal performance and longevity of the Vax C85-EW Series:

  • Dirt Container Emptying: The dirt container should be emptied regularly. To do this, press the release button, lift the container from the machine, hold it over a bin, and press the release clip at the bottom to open the door and release the dirt. It's important not to overfill the dirt container to prevent blocking airflow.
  • Pre-Motor Filter Cleaning: The pre-motor filter should be cleaned every time the dirt container is emptied. To access it, turn the dirt container lid anti-clockwise, lift the filter out, and tap it against a bin to remove excess debris. For a more thorough clean, the filter can be washed under running water (up to 40°C MAX). After washing, it must be left to air dry for 24 hours or until completely dry before being placed back into the machine. Filters should be replaced every 12 months.
  • Separator Cleaning: The separator, located within the dirt container, also requires cleaning. Turn the dirt container lid anti-clockwise, lift the pre-motor filter, then use the central grips to lift the separator from the dirt container. Twist the grips clockwise to remove the cap from the separator, then tap the separator against a bin to remove dirt or debris. For stubborn dirt, a soft brush can be used. When refitting, ensure the separator cap is twisted clockwise to lock, and align the rectangular hole on the separator with the corresponding hole in the dirt container. Incorrect fitting can reduce suction.
  • Post-Motor Filter Maintenance: The exhaust (post-motor) filter is designed for long life with minimal maintenance. It should be checked periodically for heavy discolouration, which indicates it needs replacement. This filter should not be washed, scrubbed, or brushed, as this can damage the delicate filter media. To remove, turn the post-motor filter cover anti-clockwise, then pull to remove the filter. To refit, push the filter into the wheel, align the filter cover tabs with the wheel, and turn clockwise until the centre trim is horizontal.
  • Blockage Removal: If the vacuum cleaner loses suction, it may be due to blockages.
    • TurboTool Blockages (some models): To clear blockages from the TurboTool, slide the locking ring to remove it, then lift and separate the housing. Use scissors to remove any threads or hair caught around the brushbar. To refit, align the tabs on the front of the housing, push them together, and slide the locking ring into the groove to secure.
    • Hose Blockages: Remove the hose from the vacuum cleaner and telescopic extension tube. A wire coat hanger can be inserted into the hose to remove any blockages.
  • Thermal Cut-Out: The vacuum cleaner is equipped with a thermal cut-out that automatically switches off the machine if it overheats. If this occurs, switch off and unplug the vacuum cleaner, empty the dirt container, check for blockages, and allow it to cool for approximately 1 hour. If filters have been cleaned, ensure they are thoroughly dry before reinserting.
  • Fuse Replacement: If the vacuum cleaner has no power, check the plug's fuse. If replacement is needed, always use a British 13amp fuse.
  • General Safety: Always switch off and unplug the vacuum cleaner before performing any maintenance or troubleshooting checks. Protect the power cable from heated surfaces and open flames. When rewinding the cord, hold it with your other hand to prevent injury.
