This document describes the WAVETEK 2020/2030 Autoranging Digital Multimeters, which are designed for various electrical measurements.
Function Description
The 2020 and 2030 models are autoranging digital multimeters, meaning they automatically select the appropriate measurement range for the best resolution. They are capable of measuring:
- DC Voltage (V===): Ranges from 100mV to 1000V.
- AC Voltage (V∼): Ranges from 100mV to 1000V, with true RMS AC-coupled measurement for distorted waveforms.
- DC Current (A===): Ranges from 1000µA to 20A.
- AC Current (A∼): Ranges from 1000µA to 20A, with true RMS AC-coupled measurement for distorted waveforms.
- Resistance (Ω): Ranges from 100.00Ω to 20.00MΩ.
- Diode/Continuity Test (→››): Measures voltage drop across a diode junction and checks for electrical continuity with an audible tone.
- Capacitance (┫↑): Ranges from 20nF to 2mF.
- Frequency (Hz): Ranges from 19.999kHz to 1.9999MHz.
- Duty Cycle (%): Measures the duty cycle of a signal.
- Pulse Detection (Logic, CDV): Detects positive transitions in a signal, indicated by a short tone, with a continuous tone for rates above 20Hz.
The multimeters feature a 41-segment bargraph display, which provides an analog-like indication of the measurement value's percentage within the selected range, useful for circuit adjustments.

Usage Features
- Easy Operation: Turn on by rotating the function/range switch from OFF to the desired measurement parameter.
- Autoranging: Automatically selects the best range for measurements, with the option to lock a specific range via menu.
- Menu Functions: Access additional features like:
- Reading Hold (HLD): Freezes the displayed value, useful for unstable readings or when probes need to be removed. A tone indicates a stable value is recorded.
- Relative Mode (REL): Stores a reference measurement and displays subsequent readings as a difference from this reference, ideal for eliminating test lead resistance in low-resistance measurements.
- Auto Min/Max/Average (MX-MN AV): Records minimum, maximum, and running average values of input signals. New recordings are indicated by a beep.
- Peak Hold (PK): Records positive and negative peak values as short as 1ms for AC/DC current and voltage.
- Range Lock (RNG): Manually locks the current range, allowing for manual range selection.
- Fault Finder™: Emits a tone whose pitch changes with the input value, useful for peaking, nulling, and finding intermittent faults.
- Safety Features:
- Input Protection: All inputs are protected against continuous overload up to specified limits.
- Dangerous Voltage Warning: A lightning bolt symbol and a double beep indicate potentially lethal voltages (>25V).
- Incorrect Input Warning: A continuous tone and "FErr" display warn if test leads are connected to a current input but the selector is not set to a current range.
- Safety Test Leads: Shrouded banana plugs and insulated probe tips prevent accidental shocks and shorts.
- Protective Holster: Includes a holster with a tilt stand for protection and ease of use, and a velcro strap for hanging. Test lead probes can be attached for storage or single-hand measurement.
Maintenance Features
- Battery/Fuse Replacement:
- Requires turning off the multimeter and disconnecting test leads before opening the rear cover.
