Overview

This document is a user manual for Westinghouse microwave ovens, specifically models WMB4425SC and WMB4425DSC. It provides comprehensive information on the appliance's functions, usage, installation, and maintenance, emphasizing safety throughout.

Function Description

The Westinghouse microwave oven offers a variety of cooking functions, including:

  • Microwave: For general cooking and reheating of vegetables, potatoes, rice, fish, and meat.
  • Grill/Convection (Heating):
    • Hot Air: Prepares meals like a conventional oven without microwave activation. Preheating is advised.
    • Top Grill + Hot Air: Roasts meals evenly and provides a brown crust.
    • Top Grill: Ideal for thin pieces of meat and fish.
    • Bottom Grill + Hot Air: Utilizes the bottom grill with a fan.
  • Microwave + Grill/Convection (Combination):
    • Microwave + Hot Air: For quick roasting.
    • Microwave + Top Grill + Hot Air: Combines microwave and grill with a fan for fast cooking and browning.
    • Microwave + Top Grill: Activates both microwave and grill for quick cooking and browning (au gratin).
    • Microwave + Bottom Grill + Hot Air: Combines microwave and bottom grill with a fan.
  • Auto Cook: Features 12 automatic cooking programs (P01-P10) where power, time, and temperature are pre-set, requiring only program and weight selection.
  • Defrost: Includes two automatic defrost programs (d01, d02) for meat, poultry, fish, bread, cake, and fruit.

The control panel features function pads for Microwave, Grill/Convection, Combi, Defrost, Auto Cook, and Preheat. A function display shows the active cooking function, while a time display shows cooking time or clock. A function pad adjusts power, temperature, or weight. Start and Stop/Cancel/Lock buttons manage cooking cycles and child lock. Setting pads adjust various settings. Displays indicate defrost, microwave, heating, auto, and preheat functions, as well as weight/microwave power, set temperature, and heat-up status.

Usage Features

The microwave oven is designed for household and similar applications, including staff kitchen areas, farmhouses, hotels, motels, residential environments, and bed and breakfast establishments.

General Use: After deactivating, food should stand for a few minutes. Aluminum foil and metal containers must be removed before cooking. A cooling fan activates automatically during operation and may continue after deactivation to cool surfaces. If the door is opened during cooking, the "start" button must be pressed to resume.

Cooking Guidelines: Food should be cooked covered with microwave-suitable material to retain moisture, unless a crusty result is desired. Overcooking should be avoided by not setting power and time too high, as this can dry out, burn, or cause fires. Eggs in shells or whole hard-boiled eggs should not be heated due to explosion risk; fried egg yolks should be pierced first. Foods with "skin" or "peel" (e.g., potatoes, tomatoes, sausages) should be pricked multiple times to prevent explosion. Chilled or frozen foods require longer cooking times. Sauces should be stirred periodically. Vegetables with firm structures (carrots, peas, cauliflower) should be cooked in water. Larger pieces should be turned halfway through cooking, and vegetables should be cut into similar-sized pieces. Flat, wide dishes are recommended. Cookware made of porcelain, ceramic, or earthenware with small holes or unglazed bottoms should be avoided as moisture can cause cracking when heated. The glass cooking tray is essential for heating food or liquids and for microwave operation.

Defrosting: Frozen, unwrapped food should be placed on a small upturned plate with a container below to collect defrosting liquid. Food should be turned halfway through defrosting, and any defrosted pieces should be removed. Butter, gateau portions, and soft cheeses should not be fully defrosted in the appliance but allowed to defrost at room temperature for even results. All metal or aluminum packaging must be removed before defrosting. Fruit and vegetables intended for further raw preparation should not be fully defrosted in the appliance. A higher microwave power can be used to cook fruit and vegetables without prior defrosting.

Ready Meals: Ready meals can only be prepared if their packaging is suitable for microwave use, following the manufacturer's instructions (e.g., removing metal covers, piercing plastic film).

Clock Setting: Upon initial power-on, "00:00" blinks. The time is set using the "-" or "+" buttons and confirmed with the "Time" button. To change the time, hold the "Time" button for 3 seconds, adjust with "-" or "+", and confirm.

Preheating Function: Available for Convection, Grill fan, MW-convection, and MW-Grill fan functions. Press "Preheat," then "Start" to begin. Horizontal bars on the time display indicate operation. Opening the door stops preheating. The preheating function only works after a cooking mode has been selected, and the microwave function is off during preheating.

Accessories: The turntable set must always be used for cooking, and food or containers should be placed on it. The enamel tray should not be placed upside down or restricted. If the enamel tray cracks, service is required. The grill rack is placed on the turntable set.

Child Lock: To activate, press "Stop/Cancel Lock" for 3 seconds in waiting state; a long beep and a lock indicator will confirm. To unlock, press "Stop/Cancel Lock" for 3 seconds; a long beep and the disappearance of the indicator will confirm.

Maintenance Features

Regular cleaning and maintenance are crucial for the appliance's longevity and safe operation.

Cleaning Notes: The fingerprint-resistant stainless steel front panel should be wiped with a soft cloth using warm water and mild detergent; stainless steel cleaners, abrasive cleaners, or harsh solvents should not be used. The appliance interior should be cleaned after each use to easily remove dirt and prevent burning. Stubborn dirt can be cleaned with a special cleaner. All accessories should be cleaned regularly with a soft cloth, warm water, and cleaning agent, then air-dried.

Removing Dried-on Remains and Odours: To soften and remove dried-on remains, boil a glass of water at full microwave power for 2-3 minutes. To remove odours, mix a glass of water with 2 teaspoons of lemon juice and boil at full microwave power for 5 minutes.

Troubleshooting: The manual provides a troubleshooting guide for common issues such as the appliance not operating, light not working, display errors, sparking in the cavity, turntable noise, unexpected stops, food not heating, steam accumulation, smoke, and the cooling fan staying on. For issues not resolved by the guide, contacting the dealer or customer service centre is recommended. The rating plate contains necessary data for service.

Safety: The manual emphasizes safety warnings throughout, including risks of suffocation, injury, permanent disability, fire, electrical shock, burns, and explosion. It advises against blocking air vents, using damaged appliances, or operating without food inside. Children and pets should be kept away from the appliance during operation and cooling. Only qualified persons should install and repair the appliance. The appliance must be earthed, and electrical connections must comply with local regulations. Harsh abrasive cleaners or sharp metal scrapers should not be used on the glass door. If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by the manufacturer or an authorized service agent.
