Bambu Lab X1 258 x 258 v1
Thank you for purchasing a Pre-Installed Wham Bam PEX for the Bambu Lab X1 and
P1P.
You are going to love this system!
Included:
1 PEX Build Surface or mounted to a Flexi Plate
Sheet Build Surface mounted to a Spring Steel Flexi Build Plate with high temperature 3M
adhesive.
5 ArUco Code Stickers for High Temp Plate
Set of 5 stickers to add to your Flexi Plate for the X1 to recognize it as a High Temp Plate.
(these stickers are only needed for the X1 with Lidar)
Mounting Instructions:
1. REMOVE protective film from the top of the PEX Build Surface.
2. Prepare the PEX Build Surface sheet surface using 000 steel wool or a fine
Scotchbrite pad and a bit of isopropyl alcohol (common high percentage rubbing
alcohol from your pharmacy is fine). Then clean the surface repetitively with fresh paper
towel and alcohol.
3. Apply one ArUco Code Sticker to the front left tab of the Flexi Plate inside of the
etched box. Orientation is not important.
Should your sticker ever get damaged, keep the other 4 on hand to replace as needed.
4. You are ready lay the Flexi Plate onto the magnetic bed and begin printing!
Use:
You may have to heat your bed higher than previous temperatures, do a bit of testing to
find your best bed temps with PEX. Our PEX Build Surface is specially formulated to
resist much higher temps than any PC build surface. It has great physical bond to the
parts without them ever melting into the surface.
After printing you can lift the Flexi Plate by the handles and remove and set somewhere to
cool.
Once both Flexi Plate and parts are completely cool just bend the Flexi Plate on one axis,
then on the other. Large parts should just pop right off. Smaller parts may need a bit
more bending or slight help with a spatula. Never dig into the surface if you can help it.

Overview

This document describes the Wham Bam PEX flexible build system designed for the Bambu Lab X1 and P1P 3D printers.

Function Description

The Wham Bam PEX flexible build system provides an enhanced printing surface for 3D printers. It consists of a PEX Build Surface mounted on a Spring Steel Flexi Plate. This system is engineered to offer superior adhesion during printing and easy part removal once cooled. The PEX Build Surface is specially formulated to withstand high temperatures and resist melting, ensuring a strong physical bond with printed parts without them fusing into the surface. The flexible nature of the plate allows for simple part removal by bending the plate.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Compatibility: Bambu Lab X1 and P1P 3D printers.
  • Plate Dimensions: 258 x 258 mm.
  • Build Surface Material: PEX, designed for high-temperature resistance.
  • Plate Material: Spring Steel Flexi Plate.
  • Adhesive: High-temperature 3M adhesive for mounting the PEX surface to the Flexi Plate.
  • ArUco Code Stickers: Includes 5 stickers for the X1's Lidar system to recognize the plate as a High Temp Plate. These are only necessary for the X1 with Lidar.
  • Recommended Bed Temperatures:
    • PLA: 60-65 °C
    • PETG: 50 °C
    • ABS/ASA: 110 °C
  • Recommended Hot End Temperatures:
    • PLA: 190-220 °C
    • PETG: 240-250 °C
    • ABS/ASA: 230-250 °C

Usage Features

  1. Initial Setup:

    • Remove the protective film from the top of the PEX Build Surface.
    • Prepare the PEX Build Surface by gently scuffing with 000 steel wool or a fine Scotchbrite pad and isopropyl alcohol, then clean repetitively with fresh paper towel and alcohol.
    • Apply one ArUco Code Sticker to the front left tab of the Flexi Plate within the etched box (orientation is not important). Spare stickers are provided for replacement if needed.
    • Place the Flexi Plate onto the magnetic bed of the 3D printer.
  2. Printing:

    • Users may need to adjust bed temperatures higher than previously used, and some testing may be required to find optimal bed temperatures for PEX.
    • The PEX Build Surface provides excellent adhesion during printing, preventing parts from detaching prematurely.
  3. Part Removal:

    • After printing, lift the Flexi Plate using its handles and set it aside to cool completely.
    • Once both the Flexi Plate and the printed parts are cool, bend the Flexi Plate on one axis, then on the other. Large parts should pop off easily.
    • Smaller parts may require additional bending or gentle assistance with a spatula.
    • Important: Avoid digging into the surface with tools if possible to prevent damage.
  4. PETG Specifics:

    • PETG has a molecular similarity with PEX and PEI. Bambu's default temperature settings for PETG are often too high for faster prints, requiring users to be more careful and potentially lower these settings.
    • Always wait for the plate and part to fully cool before attempting removal; never pry parts off.
    • Test PETG on a small area first, as different types can vary. If strong bonding occurs, use a glue stick as a barrier layer. A comprehensive explanation is available in a PDF on the Wham Bam Systems Support Page.

Maintenance Features

  1. Routine Cleaning (After Every Print):

    • Wipe the surface with isopropyl alcohol and fresh paper towel.
    • Alternatively, for better results, quickly scuff and clean the surface with 000 Steel Wool and alcohol, followed by a paper towel wipe. This prevents contaminants from filaments from building up.
  2. Restoring Grip (If PEX Loses Adhesion):

    • If the PEX surface loses its grip, use Acetone and steel wool to remove any residue that may have permeated the PEX top layer.
    • Common dish detergent or vinegar, followed by cleaning with water, can also be used as these agents help break down fats added to some filaments.
  3. Support and Resources:

    • Users can find an installation guide, FAQs, and additional support information on the Wham Bam Systems website: https://whambamsystems.com/install.
