Overview

The Whelen UHFPOS Headlight Flasher is an automotive device designed to provide a flashing headlight system for emergency or warning purposes. This particular model is specifically designed for "Positive Switching" headlight systems, meaning it's crucial to confirm that the vehicle's headlights use this switching method before installation. The device is manufactured by Whelen Engineering Company Inc., located at Route 145, Winthrop Road, Chester, Connecticut 06412. Technical support can be reached at (860) 526-9504, fax at (860) 526-4078, and their website is www.whelen.com. Sales inquiries can be directed to autosale@whelen.com (general) or autocan@whelen.com (Canadian), and customer service to custserv@whelen.com.

Function Description:

The UHFPOS Headlight Flasher modifies the standard headlight wiring harness to enable a flashing pattern for the vehicle's high beam headlights. It is intended for use in situations where increased visibility and warning signals are required. The device offers four distinct flash patterns, which can be selected by configuring two jumper wires: WHITE/RED and WHITE/VIOLET. These patterns include:

  • Moduflash: Achieved when both WHITE/RED and WHITE/VIOLET jumpers are intact.
  • 280 SF Alternating: Achieved when the WHITE/RED jumper is cut and the WHITE/VIOLET jumper is intact. (SF = Single Flash per minute)
  • 140 DF Alternating / 140 SF Simultaneous: Achieved when the WHITE/RED jumper is intact and the WHITE/VIOLET jumper is cut. (DF = Double Flash per minute)
  • 140 DF Alternating / 280 SF Alternating: Achieved when both WHITE/RED and WHITE/VIOLET jumpers are cut.

The flasher is activated by a customer-supplied +12VDC power switch (minimum 200 mA). It also includes a brown wire connection to the parking light circuit, which serves to disable the flasher when the parking lights are on, preventing unintended operation in certain scenarios.

Important Technical Specifications and Installation Requirements:

  • Compatibility: Exclusively for vehicles with POSITIVE-Side headlight switching. Verification with the vehicle manufacturer is mandatory before installation.
  • Power Input: Requires a +12VDC power source, fused at 15 Amps (customer supplied) and connected directly to the positive (+) battery terminal via the RED wire.
  • Ground Connection: A good electrical connection to chassis ground is essential for optimum efficiency. The product ground wire (BLACK) should be connected directly to the NEGATIVE (-) battery post.
  • Wire Sizing: All customer-supplied wires connecting to the positive (+) battery terminal must be sized to supply at least 125% of the maximum operating current and be fused "at the battery."
  • High Beam Connections:
    • The BLUE wire connects to the cut wire from the driver-side high beam headlight.
    • The YELLOW wire connects to the cut wire from the passenger-side high beam headlight.
    • Both BLUE and YELLOW wires may be extended using 14 AWG wire.
  • Control Input: The ORANGE wire connects to a +12VDC power switch (200 mA MIN./customer supplied) for activation.
  • Disabling Feature: The BROWN wire connects to the parking light circuit to disable the flasher when headlights are on.

Usage Features:

  • Selectable Flash Patterns: Users can choose from four different flash patterns to suit specific warning requirements by adjusting the internal jumper wires.
  • External Activation: The flasher is controlled by an external switch, allowing the operator to activate it as needed.
  • Automatic Disablement: The connection to the parking light circuit provides a safety feature, automatically disabling the flasher when the parking lights are active.

Maintenance Features:

  • Durable Mounting: The unit should be mounted in the engine compartment near the battery and headlights, but not directly on the engine or close to the exhaust system, to ensure longevity and prevent heat-related damage.
  • Secure Wiring: All wire passage holes should be de-burred, and grommets installed to protect wiring from abrasion.
  • Clean Connections: If mounting with tape or Velcro™, the surface must be thoroughly cleaned with a 50/50 mix of isopropyl alcohol and water for optimal adhesion.
  • Documentation: It is recommended to store these instructions in a safe place for future reference during maintenance or reinstallation.

Safety Precautions (Crucial for Installation and Operation):

  • Professional Installation: Proper installation requires a good understanding of automotive electronics, systems, and procedures.
  • Battery Disconnection: Always disconnect the battery from the electrical system before attempting any part of the installation.
  • Drilling Safety: Before drilling, ensure no vehicle components or vital parts will be damaged. Check both sides of the mounting surface. De-burr holes and remove metal shards. Install grommets in wire passage holes.
  • Air Bag Safety: NEVER install this product or route wires in the deployment area of an air bag. Equipment in this area can damage or reduce air bag effectiveness, or become a projectile, causing serious injury or death. Consult the vehicle's owner's manual for air bag deployment areas. The installer is fully responsible for determining safe mounting locations.
  • Wiring Protection: Install grommets into all wire passage holes to prevent damage to wires.
  • Fuse Protection: All customer-supplied wires connected to the positive (+) battery terminal must be fused "at the battery" to carry the load safely.
  • Regulatory Compliance: The use of flashing headlight systems may be regulated by state, county, or municipal authorities. The end user is responsible for complying with these regulations.
  • Vehicle Warranty: Modifying the standard headlight wiring harness may affect the vehicle's warranty. The end user is responsible for verifying warranty conditions with the vehicle manufacturer.
  • Bulb Life: The use of a headlight flasher may shorten the high beam bulb life.
  • Safe Operation: Do not attempt to activate or control this device in a hazardous driving situation. If a remote device is used, ensure it is located where both the vehicle and the control can be operated safely.
  • Read Instructions: Thoroughly read and understand all instructions before attempting installation or operation. Failure to follow safety precautions and instructions could result in damage to the product or vehicle, and/or serious injury to occupants.
