Checking the Rotor Axial Play
1. Remove the turbocharger from the engine.
2. Cover all inlet openings to prevent any ingestion
of debris.
3. Install a magnetic dial indicator as shown in
Figure 9-4.
4. Move the turbine / impeller back and forth in an
axial direction (Figure 9-4, (6)) and measure
travel on the dial indicator.
5. Compare readings with the maintenance
standard limits that follow:

6 – Move the turbine rotor shaft in an axial
direction.
Rotor Axial Play
0.06-0.09 mm (0.002-0.003 in.)
Limit: 0.11 mm (0.004 in.)
