Overview

This document is an instruction booklet for a Zanussi FLS 1383 W washing machine. It provides comprehensive information for both the user and the installer, covering important safety information, appliance description, operating sequences, washing hints, care symbols, programmes, maintenance, troubleshooting, and service details.

Function Description

The Zanussi FLS 1383 W washing machine is designed to efficiently wash laundry with low water, energy, and detergent consumption. It offers a range of programmes tailored for different fabric types and soil levels, including specific cycles for whites, coloureds, mixed fabrics, delicates, and wool. The machine incorporates features such as automatic cooling of wash water to 60°C before draining to prevent creasing, and a special wool programme with a delicate wash system. It is equipped with a balance control device to ensure stability during the spin cycle.

Usage Features

The washing machine's control panel includes a programme guide, an ON/OFF button, "Option" buttons (Heavy Soil, Rinse Hold Plus, Bio), a spin speed selector dial, a "Mains-on" light, and a programme selector dial.

Operating Sequence:

  1. Loading Laundry: Open the door by pulling the handle, place laundry items one at a time, shaking them out, and close the door.
  2. Measuring Detergent: Pull out the dispenser drawer. Measure and pour detergent into the main wash compartment (II). For prewash, pour detergent into the prewash compartment (I).
  3. Measuring Fabric Softener: If desired, pour fabric softener into the compartment (the amount must not not exceed the "MAX" mark). Close the drawer gently.
  4. Selecting Options: Depress the HEAVY SOIL, RINSE HOLD PLUS, and/or BIO buttons as required.
    • Heavy Soil Button: For programmes with water temperatures of 50°-60°-95°C, this button ensures cold water intake initially, gradually heating to the required temperature. This enhances wash performance, especially for biological and heavily soiled stains, by providing a "cool-soak" phase. This option cannot be used with the BIO button.
    • Rinse Hold Plus Button: Stops the machine with water in the drum after cotton, synthetic, or delicate wash cycles to prevent creasing. To drain and spin, press the button again or select programme "P". Do not use for woollens.
    • Bio Button: For programmes C and H, this button maintains the water temperature at 40°C for an additional 10 minutes, allowing enzymes in the detergent to achieve greater washing efficiency. This option cannot be used with the HEAVY SOIL button.
  5. Selecting Spin Speed: Turn the spin speed selector dial to the desired position. Spin speeds vary by fabric type: 1250-500 rpm for cotton/linen, 650-300 rpm for mixed fabrics/delicates, and 1000-300 rpm for wool.
  6. Selecting Programme: Turn the programme selector dial clockwise to the desired wash programme. The machine must be switched off before changing the dial position.
  7. Starting the Machine: Ensure the appliance is plugged in, water taps are on, the drain hose is positioned correctly, and the door and dispenser drawer are closed. Depress the ON/OFF button; the mains-on light and door locked light will illuminate, and the machine will start.
  8. End of Programme: The machine stops automatically. The door locked pilot light indicates the door is locked and will go out approximately 2 minutes after the programme ends, allowing the door to be opened. Switch off the machine by depressing the ON/OFF button, unplug it, and turn off water taps.

Washing Hints:

  • Avoid overloading the machine.
  • Sort laundry by fabric type, colour-fastness, and soil level.
  • Avoid washing unhemmed or torn items.
  • Empty all pockets before washing to prevent damage to the drain pump.
  • Remove hooks from curtains.
  • Close poppers and zips, and fasten loose buttons.
  • Wash new coloured items separately.
  • When washing fabrics requiring different temperatures, select the lowest temperature.
  • Do not wash white items with coloured items.
  • Wash very small items in a washing bag or pillow case.
  • Use good quality detergent suitable for automatic washing machines and correct quantities.
  • For wool, use gentle detergent in small quantities.
  • Bleach should be used with care and kept out of children's reach.
  • Treat stubborn stains before washing.
  • Only "Pure New Wool - washable, preshrunk" items should be washed using the wool programme.
  • If non-colour fast garments have been washed, run a rinse and spin programme without garments to remove any dye from the sump.
  • Unplug the appliance and turn off water taps after use.

Detergent Types:

  • Whites: Ariel product range (biological) for excellent cleaning and stain removal at low temperatures.
  • Non-Biological: Fairy for good cleaning and stain removal without enzymes.
  • Coloureds: Ariel Color for cleaning while maintaining original colour, as it does not contain bleach.
  • Delicate Items: Dreft Automatic for woollens and other delicate fabrics.
  • Laundry Bleach: Ace Gentle Bleach for additional stain removal, suitable for all washable fabrics including silks, woollens, and coloureds.

Detergent Forms:

  • Traditional Powders: Pour directly into the dispenser drawer.
  • Traditional Liquids: Place in the main wash compartment (II) or use a specially designed dosing device placed on top of the laundry at the back of the drum.
  • Compact Powders and Liquids: Follow manufacturer's instructions for dosage. Pour directly into the dispenser drawer or use a dosing device. Remove dosing device before drying programmes in a washer dryer.
  • Fabric Conditioners: Lenor liquid fabric softener for improved softness, reduced static cling, and easier ironing. Pour into the compartment. Bounce conditioning sheets for tumble dryers (pin to an article of laundry).

Maintenance Features

  • Descaling: Periodically use a water softening powder (separately from laundry) to prevent lime deposits, following the manufacturer's instructions.
  • After Each Wash: Leave the door slightly ajar to prevent mould and stagnant smells and preserve the door seal.
  • External Cleaning: Clean the exterior cabinet with soap and water, then dry thoroughly.
  • Cleaning the Dispenser Drawer: Remove the drawer by pressing the catch, pull it out, and flush it under a tap to remove accumulated powder.
  • Cleaning the Drawer Recess: After removing the drawer, use a small brush to clean the recess, ensuring all powder residue is removed. Replace the drawer and run a rinse programme without clothes.
  • Cleaning the Water Drain Filter: A clean filter is crucial for machine functioning. Open the filter door, place a container underneath, and unscrew the filter. Clean under a fast running tap. If the machine cannot drain due to a blocked filter, manually drain water from the drain hose into a bowl. Ensure the machine has finished its cycle and is empty before cleaning the filter, as hot water may be present. Securely retighten the filter.
  • Cleaning the Water Inlet Filters: If water is hard or contains lime, inlet filters may clog. Turn off water taps, unscrew inlet hoses, remove and clean filters with a hard bristle brush. Replace and tighten hoses.
  • Freezing Precautions: If the machine is exposed to temperatures below 0°C, turn off water taps, unscrew inlet hoses, unhook the drain hose, and position both hose ends in a bowl. Run the draining programme. Disconnect the appliance. Screw inlet hoses back and reposition the drain hose. Ensure room temperature is above 0°C before restarting.

Troubleshooting ("Something Not Working")

The manual provides a detailed table of symptoms and possible causes, such as the machine not starting (door not closed, plug not inserted, no current, blown fuse, incorrect dial position, ON/OFF button not depressed), not filling (water taps off, blocked/kinked inlet hoses, door not closed), filling then emptying immediately (drain hose too low/submerged, no vent), not emptying/spinning (kinked drain hose, Rinse Hold option selected, blocked drain filter, incorrect drain hose extension, blocked drainage pipes, unbalanced load), water on the floor (too much detergent/foam, leaks from inlet hoses, damaged/unsecured drain hose, clogged dispenser drawer/recess, blocked drainage pipes), unsatisfactory washing results (too little detergent, untreated stains, incorrect programme, overloaded drum), and vibrations during spinning (internal packing not removed, machine touching wall/furniture, machine not level, unbalanced load, very little laundry).

Service and Spare Parts

Users are advised to contact their local Zanussi Service Force Centre for faults or spare parts, providing the model and serial number. In-guarantee customers should ensure basic checks have been performed, as charges may apply for non-mechanical/electrical breakdowns or incorrect use/installation. Proof of purchase is required for in-guarantee service calls.
