Congratulations
on your new Zapp Pure UV
You have chosen the finest UV on the market. Let's take a look at it and its
features.
One of the most important features of the Zapp Pure UV is that it is made of 316 stainless. 316 stainless is
normally only found on very expensive industrial strength UV's. Most stainless steel UV's made for the pond in-
dustry are made of lower quality 304 stainless.
The "Leak Tite Assembly" is made entirely of stainless steel. The is important as the high intensity lamp
produces a lot of heat. Being of stainless steel means no warpage or failure due to heat. Other stainless steel UV's
will use plastic "Leak Tite Assemblies" in this most critical area and experience high failure rates.
The vessel diameter of 4" was carefully chosen as being the optimum diameter to keep the water close to
the lamp and still not cause flow restrictions. Some UV's use vessels that are only 2" and cause restriction while
others use unusually large diameter units. Large diameters don't provide close enough proximity to the lamp for
adequate exposure.
Ballasts that are used in the Zapp Pure units were carefully chosen "Electronic Ballasts" and not the troublesome
"Mechanical Ballasts".
Adjustable pressure switches were used in the Zapp Pure Units to shut the UV off when the water flow is shut off.
Pressure switch "Bypass Switch" has been incorporated in the Zapp Pure to facilitate trouble shooting.
Rest assured that quality was the main consideration when your Zapp Pure UV
was designed and assembled.

Do you have a question about the Zapp Pure ZP-5/1200 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Zapp Pure UV is a water purification device designed for ponds, utilizing ultraviolet (UV) light to eliminate harmful microorganisms. It is distinguished by its robust construction and advanced features, ensuring efficient and reliable water treatment.

Function Description

The primary function of the Zapp Pure UV is to purify water by exposing it to high-intensity UV light. This process effectively neutralizes bacteria, viruses, algae, and other pathogens without the use of chemicals, making it safe for aquatic life. Water flows through the unit, passing close to the UV lamp, which emits germicidal UV-C radiation. This radiation disrupts the DNA of microorganisms, preventing them from reproducing and rendering them harmless. The design ensures optimal exposure of water to the UV lamp, maximizing the effectiveness of the purification process.

Important Technical Specifications

The Zapp Pure UV units are available in several models, each with specific power and flow rate capabilities:

  • ZP-5/1200
  • ZP-10/2400
  • ZP-20/3300
  • ZP-40/4400

A standout technical specification is the construction material: the Zapp Pure UV is made of 316 stainless steel. This is a significant advantage over many other pond UV units, which typically use lower quality 304 stainless steel or plastic components. 316 stainless steel is known for its superior corrosion resistance and durability, especially in demanding environments and when exposed to the heat generated by high-intensity lamps. This material choice ensures the unit's longevity and prevents warpage or failure due to heat, a common issue with plastic "Leak Tite Assemblies" found in other units.

The vessel diameter of 4 inches was specifically chosen to optimize water exposure to the UV lamp. This diameter ensures that water remains in close proximity to the lamp for effective treatment without causing significant flow restrictions, unlike smaller 2-inch vessels that can impede flow or larger diameters that might not provide adequate exposure.

The units incorporate "Electronic Ballasts" instead of the less reliable "Mechanical Ballasts." Electronic ballasts provide more stable and efficient power to the UV lamp, contributing to its performance and lifespan.

Usage Features

The Zapp Pure UV is designed for ease of use and integration into existing pond filtration systems.

  • On/Off switch with Lamp Indicator: This feature allows users to easily control the unit and provides a visual cue that the lamp is operational.
  • Nema cord standard (shown with optional GFCI): The unit comes with a standard Nema cord, and an optional Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) can be used for enhanced electrical safety.
  • Inlet and Outlet to pond: Clearly marked inlet and outlet ports facilitate straightforward connection to the pond's plumbing system.
  • Adjustable pressure switches: These switches are a crucial safety and operational feature. They automatically shut off the UV unit when water flow is interrupted, preventing the lamp from overheating or being damaged when there's no water passing through.
  • Pressure switch "Bypass Switch": This switch is incorporated to assist with troubleshooting, allowing users to temporarily bypass the pressure switch for diagnostic purposes.
  • Components container w/ removable hood: The main components are housed within a container with a removable hood, providing easy access for maintenance and inspection.
  • Stainless Steel non-rust base: The unit sits on a non-rusting stainless steel base, further enhancing its durability and resistance to environmental elements.

Maintenance Features

Maintenance of the Zapp Pure UV is designed to be straightforward, ensuring the unit continues to operate at peak efficiency.

  • Quartz Tube Cleaning: Periodically, especially in areas with hard water, the quartz tube inside the UV unit may need cleaning. This is easily accomplished by removing the unit's hood (secured by 6 small screws), unscrewing the "Safety retainer" from the "Leak Tite Nut," and carefully lifting out the quartz tube. The quartz tube can then be cleaned with a mild vinegar or acid solution. Important safety note: The quartz tube is very fragile; users are advised to be careful and wear protective gloves and eye protection during this process. Always disconnect power before maintenance.
  • Lamp Replacement: The UV lamp has a rated life of 9000 hours. For optimal water quality, it is recommended to change the lamp annually, typically in the spring. Replacing the lamp involves a similar process to cleaning the quartz tube:
    1. Disconnect power.
    2. Remove the hood (6 screws).
    3. Remove the "Safety Retainer" (2 set screws).
    4. Gently pull up on the wires connected to the white 4-pin connector.
    5. Grab the lamp and the 4-pin connector, then gently "wiggle and pull" to detach the lamp.
    6. Carefully slide the old lamp out.
    7. Replace with a new, genuine Zapp Pure lamp, wiping off any fingerprints before installation.
    8. Reconnect the 4-pin connector.
    9. Reinstall the "Safety Retainer."
    10. Replace the hood. Critical Safety Warning: Never look at a UV lamp when it is on, as severe eye damage can result.

The design emphasizes quality and durability, ensuring that the Zapp Pure UV provides reliable and effective water purification for many years.
