Do you have a question about the Zoo Med ROCK HEATER and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Zoo Med Repticare Rock Heater is an electrical heating device designed to facilitate digestion in reptiles. It is intended for indoor use only and is not waterproof. The heater is warranted against defective material and workmanship for one year from the date of purchase, with the warranty limited to replacement only and void if the product is modified or improperly used.

Function Description:

The Repticare Rock Heater provides a localized heat source for reptiles, aiding in their digestive processes. It is not intended to be a primary heat source for tropical or desert reptile species; a primary heat source should be added if the animal consistently stays on the Rock Heater, indicating the terrarium is too cold (tropical reptiles require a minimum of 80°F or 27°C). The heater is designed specifically for use in glass terrariums. Using it in other types of terrariums, such as wood or plastic, will void the warranty.

Important Technical Specifications:

The manual does not provide specific wattage or voltage information for the Repticare Rock Heater itself, but it does list other Zoo Med heating products like a 60W Ceramic Infrared Heat Emitter and a 100W Nocturnal Infrared Heat Lamp, suggesting a range of heating options available from the manufacturer. The device is UL listed (84BJ).

Usage Features:

  • Placement: The Rock Heater should be placed inside a glass terrarium. It should not be wrapped in towels, buried, or covered, as this can cause the surface temperature to escalate to unsafe levels and potentially burn the animal.
  • Heat Source Integration: The Rock Heater should not be placed directly under or over another heat source, as this can lead to overheating and potential burns to the reptile.
  • Temperature Monitoring: Users are advised to use a thermometer to monitor the enclosure's temperature to ensure it meets the needs of their reptile.
  • Ventilation: Adequate top ventilation is crucial. The top of the terrarium should never be completely covered, as heat needs a way to escape. Lack of ventilation can lead to heat buildup, potentially cracking the terrarium glass, harming animals, or causing a fire.
  • Species-Specific Recommendations: For owners of Iguanas, Boas, and Pythons, Zoo Med strongly recommends using the Reptitemp Rheostat in conjunction with the Rock Heater. This allows for precise adjustment of the rock heater's surface temperature, which is beneficial for these species. For users in warm climates like Phoenix, Arizona, the Reptitemp Rheostat is also recommended to control the surface temperature.
  • Amphibians: The Rock Heater is explicitly not to be used for amphibians.

Maintenance Features:

  • Cleaning: Before cleaning, the Repticare Rock Heater must be unplugged and allowed to cool down for at least 20 minutes. Once cool, remove it from the terrarium. Spray the heater with Zoo Med's Wipe Out 1™™ and let it sit for 5 minutes. Gently wipe all surfaces with a slightly damp cloth. After cleaning, allow it to dry completely before returning it to the terrarium and plugging it back into the power source. If Wipe Out 1™™ is unavailable, a 5% bleach solution in water can be used as an alternative.
  • Power Cord Care:
    • Do not cut the power cord.
    • Do not lift the Rock Heater by its power cord.
    • Route the power cord away from sharp edges or objects that could cut or crush it.
    • Ensure the Rock Heater does not rest on the power cord.
    • Always grasp the plug to disconnect the heater from the outlet; do not pull on the power cord.
    • Do not use the rock heater if the cord or plug shows any damage, or if the heater has been dropped or damaged in any way.

The manual emphasizes safety and proper usage to ensure the well-being of reptiles and the longevity of the product. It also highlights other Zoo Med products, such as the Digital Terrarium Thermometer, Mopani Wood, and Repti Shelter, which can complement the Rock Heater for a complete terrarium setup.
