IGMPSnoopingOverview
Becausethemulticastaddresscannotappearinthesourceaddress
ofthepacket,theswitchcannotlearnthemulticastaddress.When
theswitchreceivesamulticastmessage,itbroadcaststhemes-
sagetoalltheportsinthesameVLAN.Ifmeasureisnottaken,
unwantedmulticastmessagemaybespreadtoeachnodeofthe
network,thuscausingagreatwasteofnetworkbandwidthre-
source.
WiththeIGMPSnoopingfunction,theIGMPcommunicationbe-
tweenthehostandrouterissnooped,sothatthemulticastpack-
etsaresenttotheportsinthemulticastforwardingtable,instead
ofallports.Thisrestrictsthewidespreadofmulticastmessages
intheLANswitch,reducesthewasteofnetworkbandwidth,and
improvestheutilizationrateoftheswitch.
