DHCPv6isanautomaticaddressallocationprotocoldenedbyIETFonIPv6networks.
ThroughDHCPv6,anetworknodecanrequestIPv6addressesandsomeother
congurationparametersfromaDHCPv6server.ThenetworknodealsocanobtainIPv6
addressesthroughothermethods,andjustobtainothernetworkparametersfromthe
DHCPv6server.
OnanIPv6network,aDHCPclientusesareservedmulticastaddressthatisvalidona
linktolocatetheDHCPv6server.Therefore,itisrequiredthattheclientandtheserver
shouldbeonthesamelink.However,insomeapplications,consideringmanagement,
economyandextension,itisrequiredthataclientcancommunicatewithaserverthatis
notonthesamelinkwiththeclient.ThisfunctionisimplementedbyaDHCPv6relay.A
DHCPv6relaycanrelayaccessrequestsfromotherclientsorrelays.
