    • K
      Kimberly HebertAug 6, 2025
If the Intelli-Vent™ control on your A.O. Smith Water Heater detects an open ignitor circuit, follow these steps: 1. Inspect the wiring to the hot surface ignitor. Replace the ignitor assembly if the wiring is damaged or worn. 2. Ensure the ignitor assembly plug and the socket on the Intelli-Vent™ body have a secure connection. Replace the ignitor assembly or control if needed. 3. Measure the ignitor's resistance at the plug end at room temperature (77ºF or 25°C). Replace the ignitor if the resistance is not between 11.5 and 18.8 ohms. 4. If the above tests pass and the error continues, replace the Intelli-Vent™ control.

If the pressure switch circuit remains closed for more than 5 seconds after the heating cycle begins on your A.O. Smith Water Heater, and the blower isn't starting, here's what you should do: 1. Check that the air pressure switch circuit wiring is correct and that the air pressure switch is not jumpered. 2. Turn off the power to the water heater, then check the continuity of the air pressure switch contacts with the wires disconnected. * If the pressure switch contacts show continuity (closed circuit), replace the pressure switch. * If the pressure switch contacts are open and all wiring is correct, turn the power off for 10-20 seconds, then turn it back on to clear the error code. If the error persists, replace the Intelli-Vent™ control.

If the pressure switch circuit remains open longer than 5 seconds after the blower is energized in your A.O. Smith Water Heater, here's what to check: 1. Make sure the blower is working by checking for 120 VAC to the blower when the heating cycle starts and inspect the wiring. If the control isn't powering the blower, replace the Intelli-Vent™ control. If the blower doesn't start when powered, replace the blower assembly. 2. Confirm the air pressure switch sensing tube is correctly connected and not kinked or damaged. 3. Test the vent temperature limit switch for continuity. Replace it if the contacts stay open below 160ºF (71°C). 4. Verify the vent pipe size (2”, 3”, 4”) matches the installation manual's requirements for your vent length, and that you haven't exceeded the maximum num...
