Usage Features
- Getting Acquainted: The manual provides a detailed diagram of the reel, labeling key components such as the Clicker Button, Sideplate, Main Drag Lever, Preset Drag, Handle, High Speed Retrieve Button, Low Speed Retrieve Button (for 2-speed models), Frame, and T-6 Torx Screws.
- Drag Variance: The Valiant's TwinDrag™ technology minimizes drag tension variance to no more than one pound, regardless of line retrieval speed. However, users must account for drag variance based on the amount of line on the spool. As line reduces, the effective drag tension increases, potentially doubling when 25% of the line is removed from a full spool.
- Filling the Spool: It is recommended to fill the spool to approximately 1/4” from the spool edge to allow for comfortable level winding and prevent high spots. For ultra-light line, filling the spool with at least 2/3 spectra line first is advised to prevent mono compaction, which can cause inconsistent drag pressure or even spool breakage.
- Rod Mounting: The reel should be mounted securely to the rod using its rod clamp. Right-handed models should have the handle on the right.
- Operation: Basic operation involves setting the lever drag. The most common practice is to set the drag at 25-30% of the line strength when the Main Drag Lever is in the strike position. The Preset knob can only be adjusted when the Main Lever is in the free spool position. Anglers can fine-tune drag settings by using a spring or digital scale with the reel mounted on the rod and line threaded through the guides. The reel features distinct positions for Free Spool, Strike, and Full Drag, indicated by the Main Drag Lever.
Maintenance Features
- Bearing Maintenance: The Class 6 A.B.E.C. bearings are Teflon impregnated and do not require lubrication.
- Cleaning: After each use, the reel should be washed down with fresh water. Light spraying is recommended to prevent water from being forced inside. If heavy pressure is needed, the reel should be put in the "Full" drag position. The reel should not be submerged. Exterior parts should be wiped with an anti-corrosion lubricant, such as Clenzoil Lube.
- Lubrication: Specific points on the reel, indicated by an "oil" symbol in the manual, require lubrication with a good quality reel oil. These include the clicker button, threads of the knob, engagement lever, and Torx screws. Grease is recommended for the engagement lever and Torx screws.
- Weep Holes: The two small weep holes on the bottom of the reel are for water drainage and should not be lubricated.
- Screw Checks: Periodically, all exterior screws should be checked and tightened to counteract loosening due to boat vibrations.
