The DVD Navigation System provides turn-by-turn guidance, map display, and various information services to the driver. It is not a touch-screen system; interaction occurs primarily through voice commands or an interface dial. The system integrates with the vehicle's audio and climate control systems, and for certain models, offers AcuraLink Real-Time Traffic Information.

  • Audio Output: Guidance instructions through front speakers; front and rear speakers muted during voice command input.
  • Map Database: Covers 48 contiguous United States, parts of southern Canada, and Hawaii.
  • Map Data Storage: White-label DVD (not compatible with black-label DVDs or other map software).
  • GPS Initialization: Average 10 minutes, up to 45 minutes. Requires an open area away from obstructions.
  • XM Satellite Radio Integration: Requires dealer demo account setup for full functionality; subscription required after 3 months for 2007-09 MDX models.

  • NAVI BACK Button: Functions like CANCEL button. Returns to previous display, then prompts for a command after a beep.

Voice Control System:

  • Primary Interaction: Voice commands are the main method for system control.
  • Improving Recognition:
    • Adjust vents to prevent airflow toward the ceiling microphone.
    • Close windows and moonroof.
    • Set fan speed to low (1 or 2).
    • Wait for the beep after pressing NAVI TALK before speaking.
    • Speak clearly, naturally, without pausing.
    • Ensure the correct screen is displayed for the command.
    • Speak louder if not recognized.
    • Avoid other voices or speaking with obstructions in mouth/heavy accents.
  • Voice Command Help: Accessible via INFO button, includes a tutorial.
  1. Normal TQI: Complete vehicle TQI, including audio system. Navigation voice functions after entering the 5-digit audio anti-theft code.
  2. XM Satellite Radio: Verify dealer demo account is active by tuning to stations 000, 001, 007, 009, 047, 122, 174, and 247.
  3. MID Display: Verify "Welcome DRIVER 1" or "Welcome DRIVER 2" appears on MID when ignition is ON (II). If only "Welcome" appears, link remotes (refer to service manual).
  4. In Line Diagnosis Screen: If displayed, press and hold MENU, MAP/GUIDE, and CANCEL until "Select diagnosis menu" appears. Then press and hold MAP/GUIDE for 15 seconds. Select "Complete," then "Return" twice.
  5. Security Code Entry: Start engine, move vehicle outside, away from obstructions. Enter 4-digit security code (from card or iN). If lost, contact American Honda Warranty. If 0000 works, replace navigation control unit.
  6. Initialization: Follow on-screen instructions. System acquires GPS location.
    • Troubleshooting: If initialization fails after 10 minutes, do not immediately follow on-screen instructions. Restart after 30 minutes. If persistent, check for GPS interference (metallic window tint, electrical items near antenna), antenna cable connection, or refer to service manual.
  7. Disclaimer Screen: Select OK after initialization.
  8. Map Matching: Drive at least half a mile from dealership, then park. Set map scale to 1/20. Verify smooth VP (vehicle position) icon movement, correct direction, and road name display.
  9. Voice Guidance Test: Press NAVI TALK, say "Find the nearest Acura dealer." Select dealership, then OK to calculate route. Follow voice guidance back to dealership; should work even with audio off.
  10. Audio System Interaction: With map screen displayed, press NAVI TALK, say "XM channel 125." Upper display should show "XM channel 125" and "Weather Channel."
  11. Climate Control Interaction: Turn on climate control (AUTO). Press NAVI TALK, say "Temperature 68 degrees." Upper display should show "68 degrees."
  12. Clock Adjustment: Verify correct time. Adjust "Auto Daylight" to ON in Setup screen. If near time zone boundary, set "Auto Time Zone by GPS" to OFF.
  13. AcuraLink Real-Time Traffic (if available): Select traffic map scales (1/2, 1, 2, or 5 miles). Scroll to downtown area; freeways should show traffic flow data (red, orange, green lines) and incident icons. Scroll over icons for details.

Map Coverage Areas:

  • Verified Roads: Driven by database vendor, contain speed, turn restrictions, one-way info. Darker colored on screen (daytime).
  • Unverified Roads: Found in rural areas, shown for reference only. Light brown on screen (daytime). Guidance depends on "Unverified routing" setting (OFF: dotted blue vector line, manual road selection; ON: blue/pink route line, pop-up cautionary boxes). Factory default is OFF.
  • Detailed Coverage: Fully mapped cities/metropolitan areas with named roads, service roads, POIs, ferry connections, walkways, traffic areas, ramps, roundabouts, etc.
  • Non-Detailed Coverage: Incomplete mapping, only major federal/state/county roads mapped. Asterisk (*) next to city name indicates missing streets, incorrect location, or unavailable address info.

Hawaii System Setup:

  1. Press and hold MENU, MAP/GUIDE, and CANCEL to access main diagnostic menu.
  2. Select "Coverage area," then "Hawaii coverage." System may reboot.
  3. Start vehicle, move to open area for GPS signal acquisition.
  4. After initialization, drive on a road until road name appears at bottom of map screen for map matching.
    • Note: If relocating from Hawaii to mainland, change "Coverage area" to US. Changing coverage area resets previous destinations, address book, and system settings to factory defaults. XM Satellite Radio/AcuraLink not available in Hawaii.
