Overview

This document outlines the Total Quality Inspection (TQI) and operational features of the 2019 Acura NSX navigation system, providing a comprehensive guide for technicians and users. The primary function of the navigation system is to provide turn-by-turn directions, access to various vehicle information, and control audio and HVAC settings, largely through a voice portal system to minimize driver distraction.

Function Description

The 2019 NSX navigation system is an integrated infotainment unit designed to enhance the driving experience through advanced navigation, communication, and entertainment features. Its core function is to guide the driver to a destination using GPS satellites and a detailed map database covering the United States, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Canada. The system also integrates with other vehicle systems, allowing for control of audio and HVAC functions. A key design principle is to reduce driver distraction, which is why many touch screen menus are limited or unavailable while the vehicle is in motion, encouraging the use of voice commands.

The system includes a voice portal system that allows the driver to interact with the navigation, HVAC, and audio controls using voice commands. This is primarily achieved through the Talk and Hang-up/Back buttons on the steering wheel and a microphone located in the ceiling console. The Talk button initiates a voice command, prompting the driver to speak after a beep. The Hang-up/Back button allows the user to return to the previous screen. The ceiling console microphone is crucial for picking up voice commands accurately.

Beyond navigation, the system offers access to various information, including phone connectivity, audio sources (such as SiriusXM® Radio), and vehicle settings. It also features HondaLink and Aha integration, expanding its connectivity and entertainment options. The system's display, referred to as the NAVI SCREEN, shows maps, menus, and other relevant information.

Usage Features

The navigation system is designed for intuitive use, with several features facilitating interaction:

  • Controls: The main controls include a HOME SCREEN button, VOLUME controls, a MAP button, and a MENU button. These are typically located on the physical unit or accessible via the touchscreen. The BACK button allows users to navigate back through menus.
  • Voice Portal System: This is a central usage feature. To use it, the driver presses the Talk button on the steering wheel, waits for a beep, and then speaks a command. The system is designed to understand natural language to control navigation, HVAC, and audio. If the system has difficulty understanding commands, the "Improving Voice Recognition" section in the online navigation manual offers guidance.
  • Navigation Setup: During the TQI, the system undergoes an initialization process. This involves turning the ignition to ON, acknowledging a safety notice (by selecting OK, though it's optional as the screen changes on its own), and potentially exiting a factory diagnostic mode (InLine Diag screen). If the InLine Diag screen appears, specific steps must be followed: selecting "Start Diag," pressing all steering wheel buttons shown on the screen (which should turn green), testing the Talk button by saying "Testing" (ensuring the mic level indicator reaches at least six bars), and finally selecting "Exit Diag." After exiting, turning the ignition OFF and then ON again ensures the diagnostic screen does not reappear.
  • GPS Initialization: After starting the engine, the vehicle must be parked in an open area away from trees, power lines, and tall buildings for the GPS to acquire its location. This process typically takes about 10 minutes but can extend up to 45 minutes. During this time, the system displays a message indicating it is "acquiring its location from the GPS satellites." If initialization takes longer than 10 minutes, a second screen may appear with troubleshooting tips, such as checking for GPS interference or antenna cable connections. If the system still doesn't initialize after 30 minutes, restarting the engine is recommended.
  • Map Matching: Once initialized, the system displays a map screen. Before entering a destination, the vehicle should be driven at least half a mile in an open area. This allows the system to acquire GPS satellites and align the current location to a mapped road, a process known as "map matching." The map screen will transition from "Locating Satellites" to "Ready to Navigate." It's important to ensure the vehicle position (VP) icon moves smoothly and points in the correct direction without "dog tracking" or spinning.
  • SiriusXM® Radio: The system supports SiriusXM® Radio. During TQI, it's recommended to tune to several channels to confirm the dealer demo service is active. The demo service is free for the first 90 days, after which a subscription is required. The radio ID (found on channel 000) is needed for subscription.
  • Traffic Information: Traffic information can be enabled via the Navigation settings, specifically under "Traffic modes and providers" and "Enables traffic."
  • Route Calculation and Guidance: After initialization and map matching, users can select a destination (e.g., an Acura dealership) from the menu. The system will automatically calculate a route and provide voice guidance, which should function even if the audio system is turned off.
  • Time Settings: The navigation display's time is synchronized with GPS satellites. Users may need to adjust the "Auto Daylight" setting to OFF if their area does not observe daylight saving time. If the dealership is near a time zone boundary, setting "Auto Time Zone" to OFF is recommended to maintain the home time.
  • Display Modes: The system allows switching between Day, Night, and OFF display modes using the Day/Night icon.
  • Volume Adjustment: Guidance volume can be adjusted through HOME, Settings, and System, under the All tab.

Maintenance Features

The document provides guidance on maintaining the system's functionality and appearance:

  • Troubleshooting: If any problems are encountered with the navigation system during TQI or after part replacement, users are directed to the service information to search for "HOW TO TROUBLESHOOT" and select "How to Troubleshoot the Navigation System." This indicates a structured approach to diagnosing and resolving issues.
  • Screen Cleaning: The screen should be cleaned with a soft, damp cloth. Mild cleaners designed for eyeglasses or computer screens can be used, but harsh chemicals, shop towels, paper towels, or tissues should be avoided as they can damage the screen.
  • Map Updates: Navigation map updates can be ordered online at www.acuranavi.com or by calling the Honda Navigation Center. Both methods require a major credit card. This ensures the map database remains current, providing accurate navigation.
  • GPS Interference: To ensure proper GPS function, it's important to remove loose articles, cell phones, and electrical accessories located near the GPS antenna, as these can interfere with signal acquisition. Metallic window tint above the antenna can also be a source of interference.
  • Battery Power Loss: If the system indicates "Anti Theft System - This system has lost power," it means battery power has been lost. To re-enable the system, the Power/AUDIO icon must be pressed and held for more than 2 seconds.
