Overview

This document serves as a user manual for the AEG AGS58200FO freezer, providing comprehensive instructions for its operation, maintenance, and safety.

The AEG freezer is designed to provide impeccable performance for many years, incorporating innovative technologies to simplify daily life. It is intended for keeping foodstuff and/or beverages in a normal household setting.

Function Description

The primary function of this appliance is to freeze fresh food and store frozen and deep-frozen food for extended periods. The freezer compartment is equipped with a temperature regulator, allowing users to control the internal temperature. Turning the regulator clockwise increases coldness, while turning it counter-clockwise decreases it. A medium setting is generally recommended, though the optimal setting depends on factors such as room temperature, door opening frequency, food quantity, and appliance location.

A key feature is the FROSTMATIC function, which accelerates the freezing of fresh food and protects already stored items from undesirable warming. This function can be activated by pressing the FROSTMATIC switch, indicated by the FROSTMATIC light. It can be deactivated at any time by pressing the switch again.

The appliance also includes an Excessive Temperature Alarm. If the freezer's internal temperature rises to an unsafe level for frozen food storage (e.g., due to a power failure), an acoustic alarm will sound, and the Alarm light will blink. The warning tone can be silenced by pressing the FROSTMATIC switch, and the Alarm light will continue to blink until the desired temperature is restored. When the freezer is first switched on, the Alarm light will blink until a safe storage temperature is reached.

An Open Door Alarm is also integrated, sounding if the door remains open for more than 90 seconds. The alarm stops once the door is closed or can be deactivated by pressing the Acoustic alarm reset switch.

Usage Features

To start using the appliance, first insert the plug into a wall socket and turn the temperature regulator to a medium setting. The pilot light will illuminate, and a brief sound will confirm power. If the Alarm light blinks and an acoustic alarm sounds, indicating high temperature, press the FROSTMATIC switch to silence it and allow the freezer to reach its operating temperature.

For freezing fresh food, it is recommended to activate the Fast Freeze function at least 24 hours before placing food in the freezer. Fresh food should be placed in the two top compartments. The freezing process takes 24 hours, during which no additional food should be added. After 24 hours, the temperature should be returned to the required setting.

When storing frozen food, especially after initial startup or a period of disuse, allow the appliance to run for at least two hours on higher settings before loading products. In case of accidental defrosting due to a power failure, if the power has been off for longer than the "rising time" specified in the technical characteristics, defrosted food should be consumed quickly or cooked and then refrozen after cooling.

The manual provides a Frozen Food Calendar with symbols and numbers indicating recommended storage times in months for various types of frozen goods. These times depend on the quality of the food and its preparation before freezing.

For thawing, deep-frozen or frozen food can be thawed at room temperature. Small pieces can be cooked directly from frozen, though this will increase cooking time. The freezer is supplied with cold accumulators to extend storage time during power failures.

Helpful hints for freezing include:

  • Observing the maximum freezing quantity specified on the rating plate.
  • Ensuring the 24-hour freezing process is completed before adding more food.
  • Freezing only high-quality, fresh, and thoroughly cleaned foodstuffs.
  • Preparing food in small portions for rapid freezing and easier thawing.
  • Wrapping food in airtight aluminum foil or polythene.
  • Avoiding contact between fresh and already frozen food to prevent temperature rise.
  • Noting that lean foods store better and longer than fatty ones, and salt reduces storage life.
  • Being aware that ice lollies can cause frost burns if consumed directly from the freezer.
  • Marking packs with the freezing date to track storage time.

For storing frozen food, users should ensure commercially frozen items were properly stored by the retailer, transfer them quickly from the store to the freezer, avoid frequent or prolonged door openings, and never refreeze defrosted food. The storage period indicated by the food manufacturer should not be exceeded.

Maintenance Features

Before any maintenance, the appliance must be switched off, and the mains plug disconnected.

Periodic cleaning is essential. The interior and accessories should be cleaned with lukewarm water and a neutral soap solution (5 ml bicarbonate of soda to 0.5 liter of water). Door seals should be regularly checked and wiped clean to ensure they are free from debris. After cleaning, rinse and dry thoroughly. Harsh detergents, abrasive powders, highly perfumed cleaning products, or wax polishes should not be used on the interior, as they can damage the surface and leave strong odors. The outer casing should be cleaned with warm water and a little washing-up liquid. Once a year, the ventilation grill at the base of the appliance should be removed, and the air channels cleaned with a vacuum cleaner to improve performance and save electricity.

Defrosting the freezer is necessary when the frost layer reaches a thickness of about 3-5 mm. To defrost:

  1. Turn the temperature regulator to "0" and disconnect the mains plug.
  2. Remove all stored food, wrap it in newspaper, and place it in a cool location.
  3. Leave the door open.
  4. Remove the three large drawers.
  5. Once defrosting is complete, remove any collected water from the bottom drawer and thoroughly dry the interior. After defrosting, reconnect the plug, set the thermostat to a medium setting, and allow the appliance to run for at least two hours in "Fast Freeze" mode before returning the food to the compartments.

Cleaning the air channels involves:

  1. Removing the plinth and ventilation grid.
  2. Cleaning the ventilation grid.
  3. Carefully pulling out the air deflector, checking for any remaining water from defrosting.
  4. Cleaning the lower part of the appliance with a vacuum cleaner.

For periods of non-operation, if the appliance will not be used for a long time, it should be disconnected from the electricity supply, all food removed, defrosted, and cleaned. The door should be left open to prevent unpleasant smells. If the cabinet is kept on, regular checks are advised to prevent food spoilage in case of a power failure.

The appliance contains hydrocarbons in its cooling unit, so maintenance and recharging should only be carried out by authorized technicians. Any electrical work for servicing or installation must be performed by a qualified electrician or competent person. Only genuine spare parts should be used.
