Overview

The AEVIT Voice Interactive Controls (VIC) 2.0 is a speech recognition product designed to operate secondary vehicle functions and provide verbal feedback from AEVIT 2.0 systems. It is compatible with AEVIT 1.0 and Gold Series systems.

Function Description:

The VIC 2.0 system utilizes advanced speech recognition circuitry to translate a trained client's voice commands into vehicle functions. It is "speech dependent," meaning it must be trained to recognize the specific client's voice. When activated, VIC 2.0 first signals the AEVIT 2.0 system to mute the radio, ensuring a quiet environment for voice commands. It then powers two OEM front speakers to deliver clear verbal messages to the driver. The system is designed to function correctly without requiring the OEM speakers to be actively turned on, provided it is wired correctly.

The VIC 2.0 offers two operational methods:

  1. Standard Corded Microphone: This is the default package, including a noise-canceling microphone with an extension and mounting block. Voice prompts are played back through the front vehicle speakers.
  2. Optional External Speakers: VIC 2.0 supports the use of 8 OHMS MINIMUM external speakers (not included in the standard kit) instead of the vehicle's built-in speakers. If external speakers are used, they are connected via a 3.5mm jack to the SPK port of the VIC 2.0 CPU. The radio defeat feature is still recommended even when external speakers are in use.

Supported Vehicle Functions:

The VIC 2.0 can control 17 different vehicle functions:

  • Left Turn Signal
  • Right Turn Signal
  • Dimmer
  • Hazards
  • Horn
  • Wipers (Lo & Hi)
  • Front Fans
  • Rear Fans
  • Louder (volume)
  • Softer (volume)
  • Cruise
  • Park*
  • Reverse*
  • Neutral*
  • Drive*
  • Start*
  • Stop*

*Functions marked with an asterisk are "Confirmation Functions," requiring the client to repeat the command for execution, an added safety feature to prevent accidental critical function execution.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • CPU Unit: The core processing unit for speech recognition and function control.
  • Microphone: Noise-canceling, corded microphone with a 3.5mm jack.
  • Speaker Cable: 8-conductor cable for connecting to vehicle speakers.
  • AEVIT CAN Bus Cable: 8-foot cable for communication with the AEVIT 2.0 system.
  • Mounting: The VIC 2.0 CPU unit must be secured with at least two ¼-20 bolts with lock nuts. EMC recommends fabricating a mounting plate with two ¼-20 studs for welding into the vehicle, facilitating installation without drilling through the firewall.
  • Radio Defeat Circuit: The radio defeat circuit within the VIC module is fused to 5A. Caution is advised when selecting the appropriate OEM wire for connection.
  • Speaker Output: When activated, the VIC 2.0 CPU supplies power to drive two vehicle speakers.
  • VIC Revision: The current software version is 02.03.01.

Usage Features:

  • Training Mode: The VIC 2.0 is "speech dependent" and requires a training process to recognize the client's voice. This process involves two parts:
    1. Training: Recording and training the 17 commands, including volume adjustments.
    2. Recognition: Testing the recognition of the trained words.
    • Training Environment: For optimal training, all vehicle doors and windows must be shut, the AEVIT 2.0 system awake, the vehicle's ignition OFF, and the environment as quiet as possible. The AEVIT 2.0 system remains awake for 30 minutes with the ignition off, providing ample time for the approximately 15-minute training process.
    • Microphone Positioning: The microphone must be positioned correctly, with the white dot pointing towards the client. It should be mounted unobtrusively, coming from behind the client's head, with the gross adjustment section straight and the fine adjustment curving towards the client's mouth (slightly to the left). Sharp bends in the gross adjustment section should be avoided.
    • Voice Commands: Clients must speak loudly and clearly, waiting approximately one second after the "beep" prompt before speaking.
  • Accessing Training Mode:
    1. Wake up the AEVIT 2.0 system and press "Accept" on the warning screen. VIC 2.0 will announce "You now have voice activation" and "Please select Training Mode."
    2. From the Home Screen, press the "AUX" icon to access the Auxiliary Menu.
    3. In the Auxiliary Menu, press the "OBD" icon to access the User Screens.
    4. On the User Status screen, ensure "VIC Status" reads "Installed." Use the "Back" and "Next" icons to highlight "VIC - Training Mode" and select "ON" to enter training mode.
  • Operation:
    • After training, boot down and then boot up the AEVIT 2.0 system. VIC 2.0 will announce "You now have voice activation."
    • To operate functions, press the Listen Switch, wait for the "beep," and speak the command.
    • Confirmation Functions: For critical functions like Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive, Start, and Stop, the system will prompt "Please confirm, [command]" and the client must repeat the command for execution.
    • Steering Servomotor Re-engagement: If an AEVIT Steering System is present, VIC 2.0 will guide the client through re-engaging the Steering Servomotor if it has been disengaged.
    • Verbal Feedback: VIC 2.0 provides verbal feedback during system boot-up (e.g., disabling controls, backup self-tests, input device verification) and shutdown (e.g., detected loss of ignition, shutdown details).
  • User Status Screen Options:
    • VIC - Load Defaults: Resets the system to original default settings.
    • VIC - Performance: Adjusts the recognition sensitivity (1 for loosest, 5 for tightest). Normal operation is typically around 3.
    • VIC - Volume: Adjusts the system's verbal feedback volume (1 for lowest, 8 for highest).

Maintenance Features:

  • Installation by EMC Certified Technician: Installation is required to be performed by an EMC Certified Technician.
  • Final Testing:
    1. Replace all vehicle door and/or dash panels removed during installation.
    2. Ensure all wiring harnesses are properly soldered with heat shrink and bundled and secured.
    3. Verify proper operation of all voice commands with the client before vehicle delivery.
  • Service Requirements: VIC 2.0 has no mandatory service requirements. For any questions, contact EMC Service.
