This document is an operation manual for the Air-Flo range of pressure-relieving mattresses, specifically covering the Air-Flo 8, Air-Flo 5, and Air-Flo 5+ models. The manual provides detailed information on the intended use, indications, contraindications, package contents, operation, safety precautions, hand check procedures, user instructions, transport mode, CPR functionality, cleaning instructions, technical specifications, and warranty information for these devices.
The Air-Flo range is designed as part of a pressure ulcer prevention program, offering pressure relief while maximizing patient comfort. These systems are intended for patients suffering from or at risk of developing pressure ulcers, facilitating blood circulation and assisting in the maintenance of blood and oxygen supply to the skin and underlying tissue to prevent skin breakdown. The mattresses feature a series of individual cells that alternately inflate and deflate.
The Air-Flo 5 is a 5-inch overlay mattress suitable for medium-risk patients. The Air-Flo 5+ is a 5-inch air cell and 2-inch foam full replacement mattress for high-risk patients. The Air-Flo 8 is an 8-inch full replacement mattress designed for very high-risk patients. The systems are designed to treat and prevent pressure ulcers by facilitating blood circulation through alternating inflation and deflation of individual cells.
The application of pressure-relieving therapy on an alternating system is contraindicated for patients with cervical or skeletal traction and unstable spinal cord injuries.
Users are advised not to use any pump other than those designed for each mattress, as this can be dangerous and lead to cell punctures. Components should not be changed by the user; replacements or repairs should be handled by a local dealer or service center. The power unit should not have anything placed on top of it, and the power cord should be underneath the bed frame. A loosely fitting cotton sheet should cover the mattress to allow moisture to escape. The Air-Flo mattress should not be used near open flames, lighters, or cigarettes. Smoking while the system is in use should be avoided, although materials meet fire regulations. The system must be thoroughly decontaminated after each use to prevent cross-contamination. The user's weight must not exceed the maximum weight recommendation for the mattress. Protruding objects or sharp points under or on the mattress should be avoided to prevent puncturing air cells.
A regular hand check is recommended to ensure adequate pressure support. This involves sliding a hand between the air mattress and the foam base (for Air-Flo 5+) or between the air mattress and the bed frame (for Air-Flo 5 and Air-Flo 8) under the patient's bottom. An acceptable range for the hand to slide in is approximately 25 to 40mm.
The pump should be positioned on a horizontal surface or hung using its hook. The mattress should be opened on the bed and secured with end flaps or straps, ensuring air tubes are at the foot end. Air feed tubes must be connected to the air outlet on the mattress and pump, ensuring they are not kinked or twisted, and allowing space for bed rails. The pump should be plugged into a suitable electrical power source and switched on; the switch indicator should illuminate. Allow 30 minutes for the mattress to fully inflate; the system is ready when the low-pressure light is no longer illuminated. Cover the mattress with a non-fitted sheet. Use the pressure adjustable knob to achieve maximum patient comfort.
For Air-Flo 5/5+, disconnect male and female CPC connectors from the pump and join them together to equalize and retain pressure. For Air-Flo 8, remove the connector from the pump and place a cap over the connectors to equalize and retain pressure.
For rapid deflation, pull the CPR cord. Ensure hoses are not kinked or tucked under the mattress, and the CPR valve is properly attached. Backrests should be placed beneath the mattress to allow uninterrupted pressure relief.
Regular cleaning between patients is essential to prevent cross-infection. The cover can be removed and will withstand thermal disinfection washing procedures. Pump Cleaning: Do not immerse or soak the pump. Spray or wipe the outside of the case with a 1000ppm sodium hypochlorite solution. Do not spray cleaning solution directly on the pump surface. Avoid Phenol-based cleaning solutions. Wipe the faceplate, ensuring no excess solution enters the faceplate or control panel. Allow the surface to dry thoroughly. After cleaning and drying, plug in and test the pump. Unplug and store in a sealed polythene bag with an identification tag. Mattress Cleaning: For daily cleaning, wipe all cover sheet surfaces with soap and water. Do not use solvents or alcohol-based cleansers (e.g., Phenicol, Hibiscrub, Clearsol, Stericol, Hycoline) as they will damage materials. Do not autoclave. For thorough decontamination, clean with 1000ppm sodium hypochlorite solution and allow to dry. Unzip the top cover; it can be machine washed at temperatures not exceeding 95°C and tumble dried on a cool setting. Air cells should be unsnapped from one side, cleaned with 1000ppm sodium hypochlorite solution, and allowed to dry (ensuring all air cells, connecting tubes, and hoses are cleaned). Re-assemble the mattress, lay it flat, roll from the foot end towards the head end, and store in a sealed polythene bag with an identification tag.
